We had the pleasure of hearing from Robert Cox - Deputy Director for Earth Science and Technology at JPL.

He told us a bit of the history of JPL and said that

instruments.

He explained that with satellites, airborne
equipment and in situ objects (in ground/ocean) are
utilized to check the following and the data collected

Why I'm in Rotary:
Been in Rotary 34 years and have had several real Rotary Moments. I’m in Rotary because of the fellowship with great people, and of course to get things done in our community and around the world.  My first big Rotary moment was in Africa (Zambia) where I fell in love with the people there.

Strange, but true:
As a child I was a short, fat, non-athletic kid.  I grew 13 inches in height when I was 13 years old, as a result I ended up with a twisted heart (fully functional).  It wasn’t bad enough to keep me off the police force.

Passions, hobbies, interests:
I enjoy working with the earth, gardening, landscaping, irrigation systems, etc.  My hobby, if you want to call it that is Archery, both shooting and coaching.  I enjoy bookkeeping as it allows me to use my OCD and love for order.

What I'm really good at:
Getting things done, regardless of what it is.

What I'd like to accomplish during my lifetime:
I’d like to get my pilot’s license (power) as I already have a glider’s pilot license (suspended by me for lack of time and money).

My favorite place to vacation/visit:
Tahiti is one of my favorite spots to vacation.  I loved Italy and would go back tomorrow.  Germany was fun, never been to So. America and don’t have a desire to go there or India.

On my bucket list:
Climb aboard a giant Caterpillar earth mover and just destroy something.

Most embarrassing moment:
In elementary school, when I was giving a verbal presentation, my voice squeaked in front of the class due to my going through puberty.

Rotary Interests:
My area of interest in Rotary is that of projects aboard, especially in South America because I speak the language and have a medical background. Have been to Honduras 3 times on different projects. I am a Rotarian thanks to my Rotarian Godfather, Mike McCaffrey, invited me to a meeting and heard exactly what I knew would be a great opportunity to serve GOD.

What don’t people know about me that they should:
I secretly love "bling" I have to really control my desires of "lighting it up" and be more conservative.

Passions, hobbies, interests:
Passion is serving and helping others, horses, gardening and the outdoors.

I am really good at:
Problem solving, was a hospital house supervisor and put out fires every shift I worked.  Learned to pay Peter from borrowing from Paul.

What I'd like to accomplish during my lifetime:
Would love to live in Italy/Sicily for 6 months to learn to cook and speak fluent Italian.

Strange, but true:
I am a very simple person with the desire to do "good".

Favorite place I have visited so far:
Bellagio, Italy, left me breathless.

My most embarrassing moment:
I went snorkeling with my girls in the Cayman Islands, was the last to get back on the boat, took my life vest off and didn't realize I had lost my bathing suit top, my girls were mortified as they and many others saw me topless, (I was totally embarrassed).

My Rotary Experience:
My Rotary moment came while I was a member of the Burbank Noon Rotary.  At that time, the average age of the Rotarians in that club was about the same as my usual table now – OLD.  After 2 weeks in Rotary I was elected Assistant Sergeant  at Arms.  I thought that these Rotarians really liked me since they elected me to that position after only 2 weeks.  My only duty was to carry out and bring in the “Rotary Today” sign which was placed in front of the building.  What I found out was the sign weighed about 50 lbs and I was one of the few who could carry it.

What don’t people know about me that they should:
I was a professional musician in my “younger days.”

Passions, hobbies, interests:
My passion turns off most people.  I love politics.

I'm really good at:
I am really good at resting.

My favorite place to vacation/visit?
My favorite place to visit is wherever my children live.  Right now Boca Raton, FL and Palmdale.

My most embarrassing moment:
I have had too many to recount.  But one that my wife surely remembers was when I was hypnotized in front of about 100 people and danced like I was Lilly St. Cyr, the famous stripper.  I found my wife under the table at the supper club.
