President Doug Feco welcomed everyone, and asked today how many of us were wearing our pins! Next week he'll start collecting $1 from everyone not wearing our Rotary Pin. Wearing our pin is a great way to promote our Club and Rotary! The dollars raised will be matched by Doug and donated to our Charitable Foundation for scholarships.
Peace Builder Club
Doug said our goal, and our plan, is to become a Peace Builder Club. Through our service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, Rotarians are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education and unequal distribution of resources. The significance of such is that we can improve the quality of lives by helping people afford food, clothing, rent, utilities, medication, and other necessities. We can raise awareness of bullying. We can protect domestic violence survivors and their families.

PROGRAM
Polio in India
We had the pleasure of hearing from Jim Lewis about Polio in India.
The most famous polio survivor was President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was 39 years of age when he was diagnosed. Jim stated that 1/200 were paralized from the disease. Both he and his brother caught polio. Jim was paralyzed but his brother was not. he was very lucky because he caught the disease in the United States and was able to survive it. If he was born in India, he may not have.
Rotary International became involved in polio eradication in 1979. That year 7000 children were vaccinated in the Philippines. RI launched Polio Plus in 1985. The good news is we're making so much progress, Only 2 countries are left, Pakistan and Afghanistan. As of last Thursday, there were only 8 reported cases. When we started, there was over 500,000.
What will RI do after all of polio is eradicated? Survivors will still need help with surgeries, braces, wheelchairs, vocational training, job placement, literacy, education, and support for Rancho los Amigos Rehabilitation Hospital in Downey. They will need our help with Global and District Grants to meet these needs.
