Highlights of Today's Meeting
Former District Governor Loretta Butts and Bianca Neff came to tell us about Rotary Peace Fellowships. Each year, Rotary funds some of the world's most dedicated and brightest professionals to study at Rotary Peace Centers. Through training, study, and practice, Rotary Peace Fellows become leaders and catalysts for peace and conflict resolution; many go on to careers in national governments, NGOs, the military, law enforcement, and international organizations like the United Nations and World Bank.

Col. Martin Spahn
We had the pleasure of hearing from Retired Army Col. Martin Spahn about his experiences in Afghanistan. He was in the Marines and then Army and then became an LAPD officer.  But he also maintained his standing by serving in the reserves.

During the time he served in the reserves, he spent time not only in Iraq but also in Afghanistan.  While in Afghanistan he was responsible for building up the civilian police force from 6,000 to more than 13,000 individuals. He shared his problems (language, calendar) as well as his successes in the NATO training mission.

Why I'm in Rotary:
My initial Rotary moment was when I was in High School and I won a $500 Rotary Scholarship for Academics, Sports and Competition. I was later introduced by Don Weber to the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise where I witnessed a great bunch of people doing great things for the community and world. I was accepted into the club and just a few months later worked my first Cajun Festival. Here I worked with raising funds, set up, and working a beer booth right where a beautiful lady in a white bikini was serving seafood pitas and alligator on a stick. Hence another Rotary moment and I've never looked back. I was introduced, fed breakfast, accepted, challenged, tested and blessed by amazing Rotarians who enabled me to share in Service Above Self. Thank you!

What people don't know about me that they should:
I'm a sincere, loving, caring man. I have a lot of compassion and like to have fun.

Strange, but true:
I am single.

Passions, hobbies, interests:
Playing drums, basketball, riding my Harley, going to concerts and sporting events.

What I'm you really good at:
Home mortgage loans and Cajun banners

One goal I’d like to accomplish during my lifetime:
Retirement and travel.

Favorite place to vacation/visit:
I would like to travel to Europe again, go to Hawaii and some other far off private beach resorts.

On my bucket list:
Live longer, take more time to enjoy life.

Most embarrassing moment:
Playing with a jazz band in a fully packed school concert. I had 3 drum solos in a song. The first 2 were short solos in the middle of the song, the 3rd was at the end of the song and I was to solo for as long as I wanted.  First solo was on time, quick and solid...song went on...second solo came, I put my head down and went at it like it was the 3rd solo for as long as I wanted...Shortly later I notice my band mates looking at me, and I glanced up to see our conductor staring at me waiting for me to finish my solo and cue the band back into the song.  The band was amazing and made like it was meant to be. This truly was an embarrassing moment for me!
