Stephanie Shannon
Sergeant-at-Arms
Stephanie started out by wanting to set the record straight on her living conditions.  She confirmed that she is not, repeat, not homeless.  However, based on the picture above, we're not so sure.  In any event, it looks like pride is keeping Stephanie from asking for help so a hat is being passed around to collect some donations.  Apparently food can also be delivered directly to her car which is usually in the parking lot of Chaparral School in Moorpark.

Despite her predicament, Stephanie continues to deliver as Sergeant-at-Arms.  Following are her opening remarks:

Kathy’s song selection this morning “Lean on Me” reminds me that as Rotarians, we have the privilege of helping others during what can be their most vulnerable moments in life. Sometimes those moments happen when we clean up a person’s yard to help them avoid complaints or penalties from the city or an HOA and the reality is that the person can’t physically or financially do it themselves. Sometimes it’s when we are providing Thanksgiving meals to our senior community who might otherwise not have one. Sometimes it’s when Karen arranges for children from our schools who need support during the holidays to be able to go shopping and experience holiday joy. And of course, Dr. P & his amazing bike building team, build bikes to help make children’s dreams come true so they can own a bike for what may be their first time and help the parents who may not have been able to afford one. And sometimes it is when one of our own members needs to ask for our support and, like everyone else, we don’t hesitate to rally behind that member and make them feel loved and supported as only Rotarians can and let them know that it’s ok to lean on us.
It’s not comfortable for us as humans to ask others for help, or to share that type of vulnerability with others. Leaning on others is in direct conflict with our ego and our pride. But when we ARE asked and someone needs to lean on us, in that moment when we are honored with the request, we should not take it lightly because when people are in their most vulnerable moment and are needing to set aside their pride to ask others for help and to lean on us as Rotarians, we should remember that it is a privilege to be leaned on.

President Kathryn Scroggin

President Kathryn opened up by saying that she hopes that everyone is staying healthy during this recent covid surge.  And that her sincere hope is that we can all meet in person for the February 3rd meeting as it appears that we might be on the downside of this latest surge.  Let's keep our collective fingers crossed.

Continuing the series on career path stories members have been sharing in honor of Vocational Service Month, Kathryn asked Dr. Gregg Hartman and Detective Corey Baker to share theirs.  They were our Guest Speakers today.

In keeping with the Dream Weavers idea, Kathryn then talked about the fact that, in order to have achieved your goals, you have leaned on others at some point.  We all need support from time to time in our lives she said.  It's critical to our success.  As Rotarians, we offer that support to those in need, be it locally or internationally.  Rotarians serve to help.  Kathryn's challenge this week is to reach out to a fellow Rotarian who is need of help and provide it.

Kathryn ended with her usual quote.  This one is from Chris Gardener:

"Strong people stand up for themselves, but the strongest people stand up for others".

Tim Gray and John Bagnall, who are in charge of the upcoming Music Festival, gave us a brief outline of the event.  It will be similar to the recent Oktoberfest event we just put on in terms of length and scope.

It's being called the Happy Face Music Festival and will be held on Saturday, May 28th which is Memorial Day weekend.  It will be a half day event at the Rancho Simi Park with no more than 2000 tickets being sold at $50 per ticket.  It will follow a minimal concept with Food, Alcohol (both beer and wine), and Entertainment provided with only those 21 and over being admitted.

At this point they will need help with the permitting process, banners and sponsorships.  Help in other areas will be needed later on.  Please see either Tim or John if you can help out.

John
John Bagnall is involved with the For The Troops organization.  They prepare Kits for Service members that John will be bringing with him to our next in person meeting on February 3rd.  He needs help in writing notes for the recipients.  See John if you can help out.

Gift of Life
Rotary Global Grant
Kathryn informed us that our Club donated $500 toward a Rotary Global Grant in Romania for children with heart problems.  This Global Grant will fund surgery on 15 Romanian children this year, where 1 in every 100 children born have some sort of heart issue.

If you have excess fruit from your trees please contact FOOD FORWARD.  Good idea and good organization.  In fact, they spoke to our Club last year.  They will arrange to come and pick your fruit for those in need.  The most recent contact is Andrea Howry.  Her email is:

The District Conference has been CANCELLED due to covid.  Everyone should have received an email with the details.

The donor search continues and is expanding with the actor Danny Trejo holding a Team Ginny flyer.

Ayden Denne

Bill Klepper gave us an update on the donor search for young Ayden Denne.  Ayden is home resting now but will need to go back to the hospital for more procedures.  Earlier in the week Bill shared with us all an email he passed on that came from Ayden's mother concerning Happy Face Hill.  Apparently it brings Ayden great pleasure so, in honor of that, Bill is coordinating a Welcome Home Ayden event on the Yosemite Avenue overpass on the 118 when Ayden comes home from his next hospital visit.  Thanks Bill!

Our Deepest Sympathies go out to Chas Wilson and his family for the loss of Chas' father.  May he Rest in Peace.

Our Guest Speakers were our own Dr. Gregg Hartman and Detective Corey Baker.  Gregg and Corey spoke about their career paths.
Dr. Hartman started by saying that he wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon since he was 8 years old.  He broke a leg skiing at 8 and thought the cast on his leg was the coolest thing he'd ever seen.  He was hooked from then on and all the way through medical school.  After medical school, his next goal was to set up practice in a community that he could feel part of and could participate in.  Well, he has certainly met that goal becoming a key and integral part of Simi Valley.  Who hasn't been helped by Dr. Hartman in one way or another?  Many people here are very thankful he chose the career path he did and one that was picked at such an early age.
Detective Corey Baker, much like Dr. Hartman, chose his career path at an early age.  He said that both he and his twin brother wanted to be policemen since they were kids.  To obtain his goal, Detective Baker was first an Eagle Scout and then went into the Police Explorers program.  He was hired by the Simi Valley Police Department at 18 as a dispatcher.  His next step was to become a reserve police officer in Santa Paula and then was subsequently hired by Simi PD as a full time officer 11 years ago.  He was focused on a goal but said he couldn't have achieved it with good leadership and mentors.  He had both, he said, from an early age.  His twin brother is a Santa Monica police officer.

Fernando introduced Mr. Marty Fidelman to our meeting this morning.  Marty is a local comedian who entertained us with his routine, the gist of which centered around his contention that you're never too old to be what you might have been.  Thanks Marty for starting our day with a smile on our faces.

Stay strong Stephanie!
Apparently no one tied the knot this week.....

Its nice to see Bruce coming out of his shell these last couple of meetings what with his questions and all.
Not too sure how John is going to control a music festival when he can't control his dog.
======================
We will be meeting by Zoom next week, January 27th.

======================
Please remember to bring a friend or an acquaintance to our next meeting.  This is a GREAT way to grow our membership!  And the guest's breakfast is taken care of.
