Welcome Back!  Hoping Everyone's Holidays were Joyful, Peaceful and Restful.  Or, at least 2 out of these 3.

Today's meeting was held by Zoom as will next week's meeting on January 13th as well.   We are having a typical, business meeting next week due to the social the afternoon of the 13th  being postponed.  The Board meeting will be held as well on the 13th after the business meeting.  President Kathryn said that meeting plans after January 13th will be determined as we move forward and deal with the recent covid outbreak.  She thanked everyone for their patience and understanding.

Stephanie Shannon
Sergeant-at-Arms
Stephanie opened the meeting in her car with her daughter in the parking lot of her daughter's school waiting for school to start.  She subjected that poor child to a Rotary meeting!  In any event, Stephanie rolled with it and started off the first meeting of the year, albeit on Zoom, in her usual organized manner.  Following are her thoughts this morning:

Happy New Year Simi Sunrise!
I hope that everyone had a family and friend filled holiday season and I am so glad that we are back this morning to continue to do the great work that we do.

This morning’s song, “Dream Weaver” (Thank You Steve!) is the perfect start to our new year.
If you listen to the lyrics, you will hear,

“I've just closed my eyes again
Climbed aboard the dream weaver train
Driver take away my worries of today
And leave tomorrow behind
Ooh, dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Ooh, dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light”

Dreams have been talked about since the beginning of time. They have been the beginning of some of the most innovative, creative, and inspirational ideas and successes the world has ever seen. They have been referenced by some of the most famous people in the world.
  • Walt Disney once said, “All our dreams come true, if we have courage to pursue them.”
  • Walt also said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
  • The famous “I have a Dream” speech is one of the greatest quotes and speeches from Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Mohatma Ghandi said, “Dreams at first seem impossible, then seem improbably, and finally, when we commit ourselves, become inevitable.”
No matter who you are, famous or not so famous, we all dream. And if we all believe in those dreams and commit ourselves, we can achieve great things and inspire and continue to help others in big ways. Continue to dream, believe, and achieve.

President Kathryn Scroggin

President Kathryn welcomed everyone back from the Holidays. She said that we will be meeting in person soon but that we all know people who have been affected from gatherings.  It is unfortunate but, in an abundance of caution, meetings will be held virtually for the time being.

Kathryn reminded us about the upcoming District Conference in Santa Barbara.  It will be held following strict covid protocol she said.

In keeping with the Dream Believe Achieve theme, Kathryn encouraged us all to be Dream Weavers.  And to continue to give Hope to those who have lost it which is what this Club is all about.

Kathryn ended with letting us know that January is Rotary Vocational Service Month.  Paul Harris saw Rotary as a cross section of community leaders with the goal of helping others. We all had dreams, Kathryn said, and most probably had someone help us Dream Believe and Achieve.  Her challenge to us to start off the new year is to create mentorships and opportunities for young people so that they can achieve their goals.  Speaking of young people, Kathryn asked Kailey Craig, nee Wagner, to say a few words about how she set her career goals and achieved them.

Kailey said she achieved all of her goals except for having a career free of stress.  Very few of us do.  Besides that, she said that in order to achieve your goals, you need to believe in yourself and to surround yourself with a good support system.

Kathryn ended with her usual quote.  This one from Eleanor Roosevelt.

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams".

Eric Little lead this morning's Invocation with inspirational words and prayer.

Don Schadt lead the Flag Salute.

Stephanie Shannon pulled double duty this morning and also welcomed our Guest, Ms. Anette Padilla.

Richard Perini was replaced by Zoom as our Greeter this morning.  Sorry Richard.

Gary White, our Parliamentarian, held a vote to accept our updated Bylaws.  The motion to adopt the updated Bylaws passed.

Now the bad news.  We are all expected to actually read them.

John Baxter gave us an update on our Neighbor in Need from last month.  If you recall, a caregiver he knew was in dire need of a washing machine.  She was caring for a bedridden family member and she couldn't get by without one.  John reached out and the Club responded.

Below is a most grateful Karen Lewis with John.  In a letter to the Club Karen described her new washing machine as "the most beautiful washing machine ever".  Well done John!

Dorina Timbol gave us an update on the family she adopted over the Holidays.  Dorina was asking for some assistance with helping a local, single mother of 4.  Dorina was able to raise over $2,000 in cash and cards giving special thanks to Karen Thompson for her support.

Dorina shared her amazement with the recipient's gratitude and gratefulness.  A real world example of weaving dreams and making them come true for a family.  It doesn't get any better.

Martha Macker wasn't able to make it this morning but Kathryn announced, as noted above, that the next Family of Rotary event at 5:00 PM, January 13th, 2022 at the Junkyard has been POSTPONED!

A reminder from Kathryn about the District Conference.  It's not too late to sign up!

Bill Klepper has been involved with the search for a donor for a bone marrow transplant for young Ayden Denne of Simi Valley.  Bill gave us an update.  A search for a match continues even though there are some potential matches in the queue.

They are looking for people in the 18-40 year old range to be tested.  The tests are being held Tire Pros, the YMCA and Lock Stock and Barrel.

Bill also thanked all of those Rotarians who recently donated blood at the Junkyard.  Bill said all of the appointment slots had been filled.  As Bill would say, "Excellent!".

Carolyn Boucher let us know that a subcommittee of Team Ginny was formed over the Holidays.  It will be headed by Sophie Klepper and will be doing a full court press in getting the word out via social media.  Thank You Sophie!

Kathryn thanked Chas Wilson with getting the flags flying again on the Simi Welcome Sign.  It was a "welcome" sight.

Our Guest Speaker this morning was Ms. Anette Padilla.  Anette is a Travel Enthusiast who also happens to be Fernando Estevez's niece.  She is a full time RV'er along with her husband David and has come to love the lifestyle.  She shared with us a short presentation about the RV lifestyle.  Some of the highlights are that she and David have been RV'ing for about 1 1/2 years.  They are on the road for 3-4 months then stay with family for a month to regroup and then back out again.  Their expenses are about $3000/month.  He works for Kaiser and telecommutes while she's a part time Social Media Consultant.

They pull a 31 foot Keystone Travel Trailer and have visited 15 National Parks and 25 states.  They love the sights they have seen and the people they have met.  There's a whole RV world out there that is very much connected and the ability to work and play has been made much easier.  Following is Anette's presentation:

We will be meeting by Zoom next week, January 13th, with a Board Meeting to follow.

The decision to meet in person or by Zoom on January 20th is undecided at this time.  Stay tuned.

Please remember to bring a friend or an acquaintance to our next meeting.  This is a GREAT way to grow our membership!  And the guest's breakfast is taken care of.
