Stephanie Shannon
Sergeant-at-Arms
We are happy to report that Stephanie is no longer homeless.  She attended today's meeting from her new home office.  Nice digs Stephanie!

Stephanie brought the meeting to order and following are he comments:

This morning we are celebrating the power of friendships and how those friendships evolve into the creation of positive change.
I have always told members of my work teams that the key to success is the friendships and relationships that you form day-to-day. These connections can be casual or close relationships that can be called upon when needed and they know they can call upon you when needed.
In 2016, I had the opportunity to attend the FBI National Academy as a law enforcement executive and participated in a 10-week leadership training experience that forever changed my life. One of the biggest take a ways is that I now have over 200 close law enforcement executives who I consider my brothers and sisters from all over the world who were in my class and that I keep in touch with today. AND I know that I can call them at a moment’s notice, and they will be there for me to support me in anything that I need. The FBI experience also made me an alumnus in the world’s largest law enforcement executive network, and I can literally contact any alumni anywhere in the world and ask for help with what I need. It is a unique bond when you graduate from the FBI National Academy.
Rotary, like the FBI National Academy, is a connection of friendships and relationships that are developed and can be called upon at a moment’s notice to help us and to make great things happen.
We meet new people through the things that we do as Rotarians every day. Through the people we help, through the other clubs that we interact with and through the conversations we have with non-members who want to learn about Rotary. AND these incredible friendships help us as Rotarians to do all that we do.

President Kathryn Scroggin

President Kathryn continued with Stephanie's friendship theme welcomed back our friends Bill Fox and Jarrod DeGonia from their recent medical scares.

Continuing the series on career path stories members have been sharing in honor of Vocational Service Month, Kathryn asked Mel Vines and Dan Jordan to share theirs.

Kathryn then expanded her thoughts on friendship noting that Aristotle said that there are three kinds of friendships:
  • Friendships of utility: exist between you and someone who is useful to you in some way. ...
  • Friendships of pleasure: exist between you and those whose company you enjoy. ...
  • Friendships of the good: are based on mutual respect and admiration.
Kathryn felt that there should be a fourth type based upon the pillars of Rotary.  It has not been easy on any of us these last two years, she said, but our friendships through Rotary held us together.  Her challenge this week is to reach out and expand your circle of friends including your Rotary friends.

Kathryn ended with her usual quote.  This one is from Maya Angelou:

"A friend may be waiting behind a stranger's face".

Steve Munday lead this morning's Invocation.  Wonderfully inspirational again Steve.

Mike Sidlinger lead the Flag Salute.

Arun Sharma welcomed our Guest, Mr. Mike Kort.  Well, not really a Guest, more like an honorary Club member.

Zoom was our Greeter this morning.

======================
Bill Fox is back!  Bill expressed how important it was to him that so many of his friends reached out while he was hospitalized.  He said he's still recuperating but doing much better.

Jarrod Degonia is also on the mend, doing much better as well.  Thank you for sharing Jarrod and good to have you back!

John Bagnall, the guy who can't control his dog, is coordinating a Four Way essay competition for high schoolers.  Scholarships are handed out to the winning writer that applies Rotary values to their daily lives.

Bill Klepper, pictured above, is organizing our next Bolio event.  Mark your calendars for April 10th at Harley's Valley Bowl.  More details to follow but Bill said that teams are being formed and that Special Olympic kids will be participating.  A very good cause and a great opportunity to show your stuff.  And, if you don't have stuff to show, the worst score will be rewarded.

Savi Bhim passed this flyer on.  Please come by if you can.

======================
Tim Gray spoke a little bit more about the upcoming Music Festival.  The theme, he said, is Music to Make You Smile.

It's either being called the Happy Face Music Festival or the Happy Face Hill Music Festival.  An Ad agency has been hired and is being paid $1000's to determine the best name.  In any event. it will be held on Saturday, May 28th which is Memorial Day weekend.  It will be a half day event at the Rancho Simi Park with no more than 2000 tickets being sold at $50 per ticket.  It will follow a minimal concept with Food, Alcohol (both beer and wine), and Entertainment provided with only those 21 and over being admitted.

At this point they will need help with the permitting process, banners and sponsorships.  Help in other areas will be needed later on.  Please see either Tim or John if you can help out.

Martha Macker is planning a Family of Rotary event on February 10th at the Junkyard.  It will start about 5 or 5:30 with more details to follow.  Bring a friend, spouse or partner!

John Bagnall is involved with the For The Troops organization.  They prepare Kits for Service members that John will be bringing with him to our next in person meeting on February 3rd.  He needs help in writing notes for the recipients.  See John if you can help out.

Carolyn Boucher introduced the new Team Ginny flyer, above.  The Team Ginny effort is being turbo charged on several new fronts she said, including this new flyer.  She has car magnets coming out and Sophie Klepper is retooling the social media outreach.  Carolyn is NOT giving up and is making sure the message is not being lost.  She noted that a person had stepped forward recently but, unfortunately, was not a match.

Carolyn's challenge to us all is to find one person you have not spoken to about Ginny's need and speak to them.

HELP US SAVE A LIFE

Bruce Bromberg has offered to include this new Team Ginny flyer in his Coupon Book , no cost.  Nice move Bruce!

Our Guest Speakers were our own Mel Vines and Dan Jordan.  Mel and Dan spoke about their career paths.
Mel comes from a family of educators and always wanted to be one himself.  His dream was to help, educate and inspire kids.  Mel said that a student with hope and direction is a person with destiny.  Mel remains inspired to helping students fulfill their dreams and he is clearly a person who found his role in life.  And we all agree with Mel when he says "Teachers are Heroes"!
Dan Jordan, like previous speakers, is making a living doing what he's always wanted to do.  He's combined his love of technology with his artistic side.  Through his firm, he's able to create tools that help people communicate better.  He was an early user of computer and associated technologies and eventually started his own firm. He works with Ad Agencies creating social content for, among other entities, political campaigns and non-profits.
Mike Kort, a fellow Rotarian, spoke to us about the drunk driving campaign aimed at high school juniors and seniors called Every 15 Minutes.  Its been dormant the last two years due to covid but is being brought back this year on March 23rd and 24th and will be held at Simi HS this year.

It is a program started in 1990 that is aimed at preventing deaths from  drunk driving.  It involves several different community organizations as well as the student body.  It is very emotional and very impactful.  The cost for the program is about $15,000 and our Club has donated to this very worthy cause.

Mike was given the highly coveted Sand Timer from Kathryn for his time.  Following are some slides from his presentation:

Nope, none this week either......

======================
Unless things change, we plan on meeting In Person next week, February 3rd, at the Best Western.  We will be following the usual covid safety protocols.

======================
Please remember to bring a friend or an acquaintance to our next meeting.  This is a GREAT way to grow our membership!  And the guest's breakfast is taken care of.
