Savi Bhim shared the history of Rotary with us including the following facts:
1. The birth of Rotary was February 23, 1905
2. Rotary was organized to promote businesses
3. Originally there were no dues - members were just fined for different reasons -- eventually they began charging dues.
4. Meetings originally were at peoples places of business, but as the group grew they realized they needed to move it to a hotel and thus began the process of meetings and meals.
5. First community project was public toilets.
6. Logo was chosen - the wheel - to represent movement -- and there were many incarnations until the last one we have today.
7. 1932 the Four Way Test was created, first as a code of conduct, but later accepted by Rotary.
8. She talked about the start of the Polio campaign by Jim Bomar that started in the Philippines.
9. She concluded with the new emphasis of Rotary, which is peace and how clubs, such as our own, are becoming Peacebuilder Clubs.
