President Bill opened by reminding us that October was Economic and Community Development Month and that, in both instances, Simi Sunrise hit it out of the ballpark.  From an Economic standpoint, we helped by employing several local enterprises such as the vendors associated with the Drive In movies we have sponsored.  We have also helped some new businesses get started such as Our Daily Bread bakery.  On the Community side, a standout example would be, again, the  three Drive In movies we sponsored this year.  The response from the community has been overwhelming having received rave reviews on social media with the number one question being, "When is the next one?".  All of this in spite of the fact that we have all had to deal with a pandemic the likes of which we have never seen before.  And, we are just now entering our busiest time of year as far as as Community Events go so the best is yet to come.  This is what being a True Rotarian is all about!

Bill also reminded us about next week's virtual District Council meeting.  Please read on for more details.

Next week's meeting will be at the Junkyard and will feature a talk (and Rolling Thunder) from the Bikers Against Child Abuse.  Please join us.

Ms. Camille Cordova joined us again as a Special Guest and is on deck as a Potential Member.

John Tolson gave us an update on Team Ginny.  He shared the good news that quite a few people have now come forward to volunteer as potential Heroes.  These volunteers are all going through the vetting process and, while no exact match has been found yet, we remain very hopeful.  The search for Ginny's Kidney Donor continues and John encouraged us all to continue to Share, Share and Share and spread the word.  As before, flyers are available so please place them at your business, your favorite restaurant or wherever people will see it.

Here's a link to a Testimonial from Rocky and Tony....
Larry and Ryan gave their last update on the movie and, with some sadness, retired the "Head".  But, on the bright side, the Big Event was a rousing success having netted over $5000 for the Club and garnering wonderful reviews from the Community.  The family oriented night went off without a hitch and a good time was had by all.  The total net dollars to the Club from all three movies is now over $15000!

And since Larry and Ryan are on such a roll, they have decided to have one more Drive In Movie this year.  On December 12 they will be showing Elf and hope to have a Special Guest that evening.
Sophie Klepper gave us an update on the Senior Center Thanksgiving Dinner.  It will be held on Wednesday the 25th, the day before Thanksgiving.  It will be a Drive Thru event with the Drive Thru times being 4:30, 6 and 7 pm.  The Y's Men will once again take care of the grilling starting at 6:30 am.  The seasoning of the turkeys will take place at Monte Vista the night before on Tuesday the 24th. Thanks Dr. P!

The musical entertainment portion of the event is still being worked out.  There's a possibility that The Ranch radio program might broadcast from the Senior Center providing this musical entertainment.  In order to do that however, we would need On Air Sponsors to offset the cost.  These sponsors and their businesses would be heavily promoted during the event.  To become an On Air Sponsor please email Thomas Herdering at

Sophie brought a Sign Up Sheet today, copied below.  So please take a look and think about how you can help.

We had the following guests this week:

Camille Cordova
Brad 'Brick" Connors(Guest Speaker)

=====================
Mr. Brad Connors
Mr. Brad "Brick" Connors honored us with a talk this morning.  But, before I get into the specifics, I have to say that I would give my left arm to have a nick name like "Brick".  How cool would that be?  Now that's out of the way, I'll continue.

Brad is currently the City Manager for the City of Port Hueneme having been picked for that position this past February, 2020.  His background is quite impressive having been a onetime fighter pilot flying the F-18 Hornet who commanded Naval Base Ventura County.  In his past life he was also a business leader in the aerospace industry, an author (Fighter Pilot Parent) and sports coach.  He played lacrosse in his younger days.

Brad started by saying that he has spoken at many events in his time but that this was the first time he has ever done so in the parking lot of a Junkyard.  Welcome to Simi Sunrise Brad!  As noted above, Brad took over as City Manager in February of 2020 and we all know what happened in March.  Talk about trial by fire.He said his military training kicked in immediately.  Leadership Culture is his thing.  Having been on combat missions in the course of nine deployments, he knew how to deal with a crisis situation where a decision needs to be made with little to no information.  He said what he learned early on in his military career was that, typically, the first report is always wrong; the second report is a lie to cover up the first report; the third report is a hybrid of sorts between the truth and the lie; and the fourth report is when you start getting the picture.  And the first pandemic reports were quite alarming.

He recounted that his training taught him to push down the emotions created by the crisis and to think things through calmly.  Many leaders he felt did not know how to react in a crisis and reacted with emotion.  He said that Port Heuneme had to do things differently due to its small population of 24,000 and a staff of only 140.  Staff couldn't go home and get their work done through Zoom meetings.  So he built a Risk Management System and put a Risk Package together with business survival being of the utmost importance.  He started that process by creating relationships with the businesses in the City, something that wasn't there prior to the pandemic.  Successful businesses within the community, in Brads's view, is the life blood of a City.  If the businesses are successful, the City will be successful.

He talked about how the police, elected officials and government in general was under attack and that there are many different views and agendas in a community.  When you focus on the  Leadership Culture and take care of your people, these various views and agendas come together with a common goal.  Everyone is encouraged to be a leader and this creates an environment in which success for everyone is the goal.
