President Bill started the meeting by inducting yet another new member into our Club - Don Rusnak.  Don came to our Club via an overheard conversation Bill was having at, where else, Jerry's Coffee Shop.  Bill and Don started talking about Rotary, something that Don was looking for, and the rest is history.  Sounds like we all need to start hanging out at Jerry's more often.

As with last week's new member, Jose Martinez, Don was a Rotarian before he became a Rotarian.  Besides his 9-5 job working at radio station KCRW, Don also looks for and repairs old computers.  Don's wife works at the library and comes across kids who are in need of computers but can't obtain them for various reasons.  Don then donates the repaired computer to that kid.  What a great example you set Don for all of us.  Welcome to the Club!

Bill also reminded us about the upcoming District 5240 Conference.  It will be a virtual meeting from November 6th through the 8th.  Two of the speakers of note are Mr. Craig Needham and Ms. Jennifer Jones.  Mr. Needham is a San Jose area attorney whose personal experience with polio leads to a very heart felt talk about polio.  His mother had it, putting her in an iron lung.  Ms. Jones is the 2022-2023 Rotary International President and will be giving the Keynote Address.  Most impressive is that she is the first woman RI President in our 115 year history.
Congratulations Don and Welcome!
Next week's meeting will be at the Junkyard with the Speaker to be determined.....

We have been on a roll lately with the addition of new members.  And to that point, we're excited to announce that Ms. Camille Cordova is on deck as a Potential Member.

Unfortunately, we did receive the resignation of Julie Picket, one of our newest members.

Karen Thompson gave us an update on Team Ginny.  She let us know that the search for a Kidney Donor for Ginny continues.  The word is out now on Facebook and Instagram and that we all need to Like and Share and Share and Share.  Someone is out there who is compatible - we just need to find that person.  Flyers are available so please place them at your business, your favorite restaurant or wherever people will see it.

Here's a link to a Testimonial from Rocky and Tony....
The Big Event is this Saturday, October 24th!  Larry Borovay and Ryan Valencia gave us an update.  There are only 10 tickets remaining to be sold!  And this is on top of the fact that 25 more tickets were added to this show.  Looks like we'll add another $4-5,000 to our coffers.  Nice job gentlemen!

They still need some volunteers, specifically helping out with parking, security and, here it comes - porta potty duty.  Please reach out to Ryan or Larry.  They say this porta potty duty really builds character so something to think about.

Geovanny's Our Daily Bread Bakery is taking pre-orders now and will deliver them to the event.

Sophie Klepper gave us an update on the Senior Center Thanksgiving Dinner.  As usual, it will be held on Wednesday the 25th, the day before Thanksgiving.  What's not usual is that it will be a Drive Thru event.  The food order has been placed and the turkeys are lined up.  Thanks Leigh!  The seasoning of the turkeys will take place at Monte Vista the night before on Tuesday the 24th. Thanks Dr. P!  The grilling starts that Wednesday morning at 6:30 am.  There will be three different Drive Thru times - 4:30, 6 and 7.

Volunteering will be different this year.  The Senior Center has asked us to limit the number of volunteers onsite for obvious reasons.  But volunteers are still needed.  Sophie will put out a Sign Up Sheet at next week's meeting with specific duties and time slots to be filled.  So keep a look out for that and think about how you can help.
======================
Once again, Dr. P mesmerized us with his mastery of preparing a Center Piece just in time for the holidays.  And for some of the guys in attendance, your comments were heard.  Remember, it's OK to show your sensitive side.

Many of you inquired this morning on how to sign up and join his floral class.  Click on the link below and that will send you to the registration form.

Although Dr. P can't have the class in person, he can definitely do it on Zoom and for those who can't make the Zoom class, he'll have the lesson/demonstration recorded and posted on YouTube

The Zoom class will be ‘live’ at 6:30 pm, Thursday, October 29th.  The video will be available to watch following the class.

He’ll have the flowers, supplies and materials for you to pick up at Monte Vista.  The materials will be available for pickup, starting Wednesday, October 28, 12 noon to 5:30 pm and Thursday October 29, 9:30 am-5:00 pm.  As in the past, he's are asking for a $10 donation to help cover the costs of the supplies.

SANTA SUSANNA HIGH SCHOOL FILM SCHOOL
Tim Gray introduced us to Luke Golden, the Film Instructor at Santa Susanna High School.  Luke was obviously very proud of his students, three of whom accompanied him today.  They were Gavin Woodgerd, Ryan Schantz and Emma McAdams.  Luke is teaching them real world experience in the art of film making.  If you recall, there were discussions in the past about our Club co-sponsoring a Film Fest with the Santa Susanna Hi Film School.  Well, that time is now.  We will be co-sponsoring a Film Fest with Santa Susanna on November 13th.  It will take place where we have been holding our Drive In movies, the Park and Rec site off of Stearns.  It will follow the same Drive In movie procedures where viewing will be from your car.  Luke has about 1-2 hours of content his students have put together that will be shown.  He's looking for sponsors to help finance this.  Please see Tim Gray if you can help out.

REMINDER
FM Radio "Drive-in" Capability for Simi Sunrise
Just wanted to remind you that, thanks to Chas Wilson, you can now sit safely in your car and simply tune to 88.9 on the FM dial and listen to our outdoor meetings.  You will clearly hear the audio from our entire meeting in the Junkyard parking lot.

=====================
Ms. Jennifer Swenson, President of Adventist Health Simi Valley Hospital gave us a Covid Update today.  She has over 30 years of experience in the Health Care industry and had previously worked at Simi Hospital as the Controller.  The Dodger fans in attendance were impressed with her Dodger Blue outfit but that faded a bit when it was learned she is a member of the Simi Rotary Noontime Club.  Her reasoning for not being in our Club was solid though and had to do with family obligations.  We assume that as soon as those obligations pass, she will be jumping ship and joining our Club.  She really won us over though when she announced that her Club will be providing the dessert for the Senior Center Thanksgiving Dinner.  That's 500 pies!  Thank You Jennifer!  We can be bribed.

Jennifer started by saying that, while the Hospital had prepared for an initial surge of Covid cases back in March, it never materialized.  They have been busy though having treated over 400 Covid patients but they never saw the surge that was predicted.  She explained that Simi Valley was the hardest hit community in Ventura County and they gained a lot of experience from it.  Here are some facts she shared with us:

 - Ventura County is doing well with the trend of cases going downward.
 - the number of people hospitalized in Ventura County is now in the 20's with 13 in ICU.
 - at the pandemic's peak, Simi Valley alone had 18 in ICU.
 - there are now just 8 Covid patients in Simi Hospital.
 - the Positivity Rate in Ventura County is currently at 5.1%.  It needs to be in the 1-3% range in order for us to open up to the next level which is orange.
 - she is concerned about the recent surge in Europe and, if Europe is a predictor, the US could see a second surge.  She is confident that this second surge can be minimized if we continue to follow the current protocol of mask wearing, social distancing and, most importantly, washing our hands.
 - every patient that is admitted to Simi Hospital is tested for Covid and her hospital has a weekly allotment of 600 tests.
 - every staff member is tested and they have done a great job of minimizing any outbreaks at the hospital.
 - while the California Department of Health had previously mandated that no visitors were allowed in any California hospitals, that has now been rescinded.  Patients are now allowed one visitor but that visitor must be screened.  If that visitor shows any sign of Covid, they are immediately tested with the results being turned around within 45 minutes.

Jennifer ended by saying that she is often asked what keeps her up at night.  Her answer was keeping her staff safe and healthy.  Without a healthy staff, the patients can't be properly cared for.
