Sergeant-at-Arms
Stephanie brought the meeting to order with a shout out about the Happyface Music Festival.  She said that we are all walking billboards for the event and to share the excitement with family and friends.  A great opportunity to share what Rotary is all about as well.  She encouraged us to volunteer and help out and to continue to make changes in people's lives.

Following are her written comments:

This morning’s Rotary International Theme Song “We serve to change Lives” sang about bringing goodwill and friendships to our lives and that when we combine our strengths together, the challenges we face won’t faze us.

Kathy has been talking to us about the power and strength of our connections through friendships and relationships and how they help us to help the community and help us to change lives.

The Happy Face Music Festival is our most recent effort to join together as friends and members in this Rotary Club so we can bring music, food, beverages, and fun to the community so we can raise money so we can continue to help the community and continue to change lives.   This festival is a great example of the power to change lives through our relationships and connections and we should all be excited to support and volunteer to help Tim and his committee in making this event a success.

I want to challenge each of you to tap into your relationships and connections in the Club and in the community to help make the music festival a success, to help bring awareness to the great things that Rotary and the Simi Sunrise Rotary Club does and to help us to continue to make a difference in others’ lives.

President Kathryn Scroggin

President Kathryn, besides modeling the latest, must have fashion piece, AKA the Happy Face Music Festival T-shirt, welcomed our Zoom participants wishing Arun a speedy recovery.  Also, it looks like that, for the foreseeable future, all meetings will be held in person at the Best Western with the Board meeting ( second Thursday of the month) being held by Zoom.

She then continued with her theme of going Faster and Higher and being Stronger together, referring to Rotary International's 2021 theme song, We Serve to Change Lives. The lyrics, she said, talk about the integrity within us being smiles for everyone to see.  We Rotarians honor those with that integrity with, among other things, Paul Harris Fellowships and asked Peter Cicciari to do just that - see below.

Kathryn talked about the importance of relationships and how these relationships can grow stronger together.  The personal connections made in Rotary can be unforgettable as is the case with her, she said, with the two Rotarians who recruited her in 1996.  She ended by saying we Rotarians are defined by our commitment to the Pillars of Rotary and our desire to serve to change.

Of course Kathryn had her quote.  She quoted Albert Camus today, "Don't walk in front of me.....I may not follow.  Don't walk behind me.....I may not lead.  Walk beside me.....just be my friend."

Josh Alexander lead this morning's Invocation.

John Baxter lead the Flag Salute with a thought about how the pledge we do this morning is something that we all, as Americans, have in common and can get behind.  Well said John.

Coery Baker welcomed our guests this morning including Mr. Dennis Rast, a former member who stopped by for a visit.  We also had Ms. Kim Gray, Tim's wife, and Mr. Warren Lee.

Cesar Zambrano was our Greeter this morning, doing it with style.  Happy Birthday Cesar!

Peter Cicciari talked about the importance of the Rotary Foundation and all of the wonderful things that are accomplished with our donations both locally and internationally.  And to honor their support, Peter presented a Paul Harris Fellow to Karen Thompson (left) and Stephanie Shannon (right).  This is the 7th Paul Harris for both!  Congratulations Karen and Stephanie.

Peter wasn't done.  He then had the pleasure of working with Steve on spinning the world famous virtual Spin Wheel for the 30/30 Drawing.  A $1000 is donated to Rotary International  for every winner picked from the wheel.  In this case, the wheel was spun twice with Louis Kruglov and the Dan Gesell coming up winners.  $2000 is being donated in their names.  Congratulations guys!

Kathryn is requesting project ideas for the remaining 4 months of the year.  If you have something in mind, please see Bill Klepper.  Bill will be coordinating this task.

Remember, Faster Higher Stronger Together!

======================
Bill Klepper is looking for help cleaning up Happy Face Hill.  Mark your calendar for Saturday, February 26th.  Meet at Jerry's at 7 AM.

Kathryn announced that she got word from Leigh Seaton that the Senior Center is looking for volunteers to help pack 175 meals per week.  Let Kathryn know if you're interested and she will pass that on to Leigh.

A big thanks to Steve P. for John Bagnall's generous, generous offer to help out.  John's hand went up so fast even he didn't know it was up.

Kathryn followed up with the need to remove the container/trailer we have stored on the Dave's Towing property.  She asked for volunteers to form a group to take this on.  Vince Dulcich, Matt Rowe, Laura Berger, Steve Pietrolungo, John Baxter, Bob Donnelly, Geovanny Ragsdale, Deb Davila and, yup, John Bagnall all put their hands up.  Bagnall just can't keep his hand down!  Stay tuned but this has to move quickly because we need the trailer off of the property by the end of March.

If anyone has any ideas on where a trailer can be stored, please speak up.

A note about the upcoming Rotary International Convention being held in Houston from June 4th through the 8th this year.  Kathryn encouraged those that can to accompany Laura to this world wide event.

Bill Klepper is organizing our next Bolio event.  Mark your calendars for April 10th at Harley's Valley Bowl.  Bill said that teams are being formed and that Special Olympic athletes will be participating.  A very good cause and a great opportunity to show your stuff.  And, if you don't have stuff to show, the worst score will be rewarded.
Bill Klepper

Tim Gray said that we are that close to inking a deal with our headliner band for the Happyface Music Festival.  And, he said, the website should be up and running any time now.  He has more T-shirts for sponsors for those interested so let him know.

Tim also said he's looking for games (i.e., Cornhole, Horseshoes, etc.) that can be used at the Festival.  See Tim if you can help.

To recap, The Happyface Hill Music Festival will be held on Saturday, May 28th which is Memorial Day weekend.  It will be a half day event at the Rancho Simi Park with no more than 2000 tickets being sold at $50 per ticket.  It will follow a minimal concept with Food, Alcohol (both beer and wine), and Entertainment provided with only those 21 and over being admitted.

Carolyn Boucher talked about the upcoming Simi Street Fair on April 30th.  The plan is to have a booth highlighting Team Ginny as well as the various events and activities that our Rotary Club is involved with.  She's looking for help and ideas.

Jim, Kathryn and the coveted Club timer

Mr. Jim Fryhoff, Commander in the Ventura County Sheriff's office, spoke to us this morning.  The topic had to do with school shootings, a subject he was very passionate about.  His interest started when he was Thousand Oaks Chief of Police and many high profile school shootings had taken place nationally.  He worked with the local schools and eventually developed a presentation in 2007 that he has taught to many classes and professional organizations.  Some of the points he left us with are as follows:

- Someone knows about the upcoming shooting in 80% of all incidents.  There are many missed opportunities to stop the shootings from happening.

- One of the goals of his presentation is to educate his audience on how to communicate this information on a potential shooting to the proper authorities.

- The goal of his program is not to necessarily arrest someone but to prevent the shooting in the first place.

- A common denominator with perpetrators of these horrific crimes is that they there is dysfunction within their family or with a particular relationship.

Thanks Jim for a very informative morning.
