President Bill started the meeting by inducting our newest member - Jose Martinez.  Jose is the owner of Mission Burrito on Tapo Street and was already a Rotarian at heart.  Jose has given back to our community on numerous occasions and makes a welcome addition to our Club.  Congratulations Jose!

Bill then invited Dr. P up to hand out the coveted prizes to our Halloween Quiz contest winners from last week's Zoom meeting.  However, before he handed out the awards, Dr. P honored Tony from the Junkyard with a surprise announcement.  Tony was given the title of Succulent Prick along with a shirt to match.  Congratulations Tony!

The awards then followed.   The Quilt Goddess, AKA Jake Finch, came in first but was unable to attend the meeting in person. The Magic Pony came in second but the problem was that no one owned up to the name so the second prize wasn't handed out either.  There's a reward for anyone who reveals the Magic Pony's identity.  The third and fourth place winners, Tim Gray and Carolyn Boucher respectively, came up to receive a plant of their choosing.  And our fifth place winner, Corey Baker, was also unable to attend but who can blame him when you come in fifth?

Bill ended the President's Message by saying that Service is alive and well here in Simi Valley with so many Rotary projects coming up.  He brought up the point that many of our current Rotary members were introduced to Rotary by working on Rotary projects before becoming members.  So bring along family and friends to these upcoming projects, a great way to increase membership.
Our Newest Member - Mr. Jose Martinez.
What a proud moment for Tony!

Kathy Scroggin said it's the responsibility of each club member to develop and maintain membership.  She is challenging each of us to connect and keep an eye out for quality people to bring into our club who have passion, strength and compassion.  They just need to be asked.

Carolyn Boucher gave us an update on Team Ginny.  She let us know that the search for a Kidney Donor for Ginny continues.  The word is out now on Facebook and Instagram and that we all need to Like and Share and Share and Share.  Someone is out there who is compatible - we just need to find that person.  Flyers are available so please place them at your business, your favorite restaurant or wherever people will see it.

Here's a link to a Testimonial from Rocky and Tony....
Larry Borovay gave us an update.  Tickets are now 80% sold out and Bill was able to strong arm a sponsorship from Jim Takotlian and Jim Visage at today's meeting. The man is relentless!

Larry thanked Leigh Seaton for arranging Porta Pottys and generators for the event.  The restroom break won't take so long this time.  Please look for volunteer sign up sheets as help will be needed.

And, lastly, please continue to help promote this event!!!

Several of us met last Saturday to help out a community member in need.  Leigh Seaton became aware of a lady in town, Jackie Chicagus who is 92 years young, who needed to have a tree removed from her property.  The Simi Sunrise Rotary Club came to to the rescue and, in short order, made fire wood of the tree.  This type of help really strikes at the heart of what Rotary is all about.  Thanks to all who helped including (see picture): Leigh Seaton, Sue Klepper, Stephanie Shannon and her son Jacob, Karen Seaton (Leigh's boss), Bill Klepper, Matt Rowe, Chas Wilson, Mike Sidlinger and Jim Lowry.  Not pictured are Bill Fox and Louis Kruglov.  Jackie is between Sue and Stephanie.
Here's the culprit prior to the A-Team's arrival
Here's the result....
Just a reminder that the Senior Center Thanksgiving Dinner is getting closer.  Keep a look out for  a volunteer request from Sophie Klepper.

FM Radio "Drive-in" Capability for Simi Sunrise
Yes, you read that correctly.  Our very own Chas Wilson was able to demonstrate this capability at today's meeting.  You can now sit safely in your car and simply tune to 88.9 on the FM dial.  You will clearly hear the audio from our entire meeting in the Junkyard parking lot.  Very exciting news Chas, thanks!

Kyle and Patrick
Today we had the pleasure of welcoming two members of Simi Valley's SWAT Team, Sergeant Patrick Zayicek and Police Detective Kyle Crocker.  Patrick apologized for being late, blaming it on some crazy guy dropping an iPad in the road.  All eyes turned to Dr. P....

But, before Patrick and Kyle were allowed to make their presentation, they had to prove their mettle to us.  And what better way of proving it than to have them compete in that most manly of competitions, the Water Balloon Toss.  To make matters worse for Patrick and Kyle, we brought in a ringer for them to compete against.  Yes, our very own Master Water Balloon Tosser, Vince "the Beast" Dulcich.  Let's just say that Vince met his match in Kyle.

Patrick has been with Simi PD for 17 years working in various departments.  Besides SWAT, he currently works in public relations.  Kyle has been on the force for 15 years, 13 of which has been with SWAT.  He has also worked in various departments with an expertise in fire arms.  One of his current duties involves hiring new officers.

They explained that the Simi Valley SWAT team is made up of 6 part time members with training taking place twice a month.  While Simi Valley's need for a SWAT Team response is fairly rare, their training assumes a worse case scenario.  They explained that a SWAT team is made up of an Entry Team and a Containment Team with the goal of always looking for a peaceful resolution to any incident.

They brought one of their support vehicles with them.  It is their equipment truck that was purchased from the Fire Department for $1 which they have had for 4-5 years now.

Patrick, in his role with Public Relations, let us know of a couple of upcoming events.  One has to do with Breast Cancer.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and, in honor of that, the Simi Valley Police Department is selling Pink Patches which look similar to the SVPD logo but in pink.  All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.  The other is a Halloween Drive Thru Trick or Treat family event at the Police Station on October 24th from 6-10 pm.

Kyle, in his role of hiring new police officers, let us know that the department is currently hiring.  With the pending retirement of a some the officers, there will be quite a few openings coming up.  The hiring process takes about six months and a person needs to be 21 years old or older upon his appointment with no maximum age limit.  So, for those retirees out there who are looking for another career, something to think about.  You do need to pass a physical test though.  Details, details......

The Contest

Please note that next week's Guest Speaker will be Jennifer Swenson with Adventist Hospital and she will be giving us a COVID-19 Update.  You won't want to miss this!
