2022 - 2023 Rotary Theme
President Laura opened the meeting with an acknowledgment of our Zoom participants and her elevator speech.  She then spoke a bit more about our Club being a Peace Builder Club and that our Club is "getting louder".  Our footprint and recognition in the community is growing.  She then said she needs two more Peace Builder Committee members to round out the committee.  Please see Laura if you are interested.  More information on the the Peace Builder Club is shown below.

Laura also asked us to SAVE THE DATE for a Group 5 meeting on Sunday, December 4th at the Sunset Hills Golf and Tennis Club.  It will be a brunch starting at 10 AM and will feature Howard Berger, an Academy award winning make up artist as the Guest Speaker.

As a reminder, next week's meeting, October 13th, is a Board Meeting in person at Varenita.  There will be a short, regular meeting from 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM with the Board meeting to follow at 8:00 AM.  All Board members should attend in person.  All others are invited to attend in person as well but need to RSVP with Laura in order to get an accurate head count.  If you have breakfast at Varenita, you will be charged for it on top of your regular dues.  If you don't attend the regular meeting in person, you can participate via Zoom.

Laura then wrapped up the meeting with a recitation of the Four Way Test:

Fun Facts:  Chas lived in Canada as a young boy for 5 years and he obtained his pilot's license while in college.
And Chas today
No, that's not Neil Young, that's Dan Gesell.

Fun Facts: He opened a coffee house in a church basement his first year in college.  And he met his wife in Fantasy Land but didn't we all?

Laura presented permanent Club badges to James Winstanley, Eric Kaufman and Eric Bordo.  Congratulations to all!  It should be noted that Steve Hise hasn't received his permanent badge because he just hasn't stepped up to the plate yet.  Steve, you really need to get more involved to get that honor.

Mr. Frederick St-Laurent

Mr. St-Laurent is the husband of Sylvie St-Laurent, one of our newest Club members.  Fred is the Director of Composite Engineering for Easton Baseball, now Rawlings Sporting Goods.  He earned his degree in Composite Materials and Mechanical Engineering in Montreal in 1994.  He started his career developing the first ever composite hockey shaft in 1994 and then switched to developing the first composite baseball bats in 1998 and has never looked back.

Before Easton was acquired, they were producing about 50,000 baseball bats a month.  That has doubled to 100,000 a month with Rawlings.  Some interesting items of note are that high end, composite baseball bats cost $299 to $350 each.  And high end composite baseball bats for college, specifically Fast Pitch Women's Softball cost upwards of $500 each.  And the beautiful thing about this industry is that the more expensive the bat, the shorter is its life span.  Planned obsolescence taken to new height!

He said his goal has always been to design revolutionary composite designs that optimize the sporting goods performance.  To that end, he has jointly developed over 25 patents that have been issued and about another 10 that are pending.  Fred said that these patents are key to maintaining a strong IP portfolio and protecting your technology.  His personal goal is to keep developing high performance baseball bats and to keep putting smiles on the faces of kids and adults when  they hit that long ball!

A quick side note.  No Steve, we really don't want to see where your bruises are from playing baseball.  Way too much information!
Fred St-Laurent
