We have come full circle with our meeting place.  Thank You Jim Lowry for sending this picture taken June, 1986 of the Charter Members of the Simi Sunrise Club.  What makes this picture special is that it was taken here at the Best Western, the home of our new meeting place, when this establishment was called the Clarion.  While our Club attire has changed over the years, sure don't miss those ties.  By the way, Mr. Lowry is the young man in the upper left corner.  See if you can identify any others.

Stephanie Shannon
Sergeant-at-Arms

Stephanie got the meeting going by talking about treating each other with dignity and respect and that extends to us while we are now indoors. She asked that we consider the comfort and safety of others while we meet indoors and asked that we make an effort to wear face masks when we can and maintain a safe distancing when we can.

Stephanie had previously talked about new ways to encourage people to join the Rotary family and support local groups while doing so.  Her son plays baseball for Moorpark High, so she took advantage of the opportunity to sponsor a sign and designed it in a neutral, non-Simi Sunrise way, so that she did not disrespect our friends in the Moorpark Clubs all while encouraging people to join Rotary Clubs. She said that here are literally hundreds of visitors during the high school baseball season from all over Ventura County and parts of California who will see this sign and may be inspired to join their local Rotary Club. Her hope is that this sign encourages that membership to happen. She also reminded us of her challenge for all of you to find ways to sponsor local groups and events by creating a Rotary sponsorship signs and encourage others with their unique backgrounds, perspectives and life experience to join Rotary.

President Kathryn talked about the changes that we have gone through since the pandemic hit such as the Oktoberfest we just put on and this new meeting place.  And of course she was accompanied by David Bowie and Changes.  Steve is all  over it!

It was nice to again meet in a more traditional meeting place and the room was filled with excitement.  A very nice setting.

Kathryn then asked Leigh Seaton and Bill Klepper to come up and be recognized.  Last year, while Bill was Club President and Leigh was Club Service Director, our Club was awarded the District 5240 Local Service Award for the 19 Community Service Projects that Leigh coordinated, but under Bill's watchful eye of course.  Great job gentlemen!

Our Technology Team made up of Chas Wilson, Steve Pietrolungo, Tim Gray and Don Rusnak was acknowledged by Kathryn for all that they do.  Among those many things are getting us through the pandemic with a hybrid meeting solution that included a combination of in person and Zoom.  This allowed our meetings to be shared by all.

Next to be recognized were Laura Berger and Larry Borovay for the great event we had with the Oktoberfest.  It was very much a success.  They lead the charge in coming up with a new way for our Club to raise our much needed funds, no small feat.  Job well done!

Kathryn reminded us about the visit by the District Governor next week here at the Best Western.  And she is asking that we wear our best.  Our best, according to Jim Lowry, is a Blue Blazer, Tan Pants and a Tie - see picture at the beginning of the Bulletin.

She ended by first asking us to keep David Hart, one of our members, in our prayers as he is ill.  She then wrapped up by asking us all to go out and perform that Random Act of Rotary Kindness and let's continue to have those conversations that matter.  This is how we should function as a Club.  And, of course she had to end with a quote.  This time, it is from Steve Jobs, "The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do".

Larry Borovay and Fred Thompson are working with the 3 Simi Clubs, the Simi Police Department and Simi Park and Rec to come up with a new event.  It will be centered around providing a healthy future for those kids who are abusing drugs or are thinking about doing so.  It is still very early in the planning stages but will most probably be held in a park sometime in mid May.

Leigh Seaton and Bill Klepper are organizing another graffiti cleanup on Hummingbird Trail.  If interested, meet at the usual place this Saturday morning, the 23rd - Jerry's.  And, of course this announcement was accompanied by Seals and Croft's Hummingbird song.  It has been said that some Club members come to the meetings simply for the music now.  Could be....
I wanted to share a story I've been meaning to share for a while now.  Several months ago a young lady approached me at the gym here in Simi.  No Bruce, not what you're thinking.  I was wearing the blue YES T-shirt I had received as a volunteer for helping out at the last one we had.  This young lady asked me if I was involved with YES and I said I had helped out and was familiar with it.  She then said that she had attended a few years back. She had done so against her wishes and only attended after being talked into it by her mother.  She then proceeded to tell me that it had changed her life - her words, not mine.  And she remembered one lady in particular who had really made an impact on her and her name was Dorina.

Dorina know that you made a huge change in this young lady's life and I'm sure quite others as well.

In order to honor World Polio Day, a Group 5 effort (which comprises all 5 Rotary Clubs in Moorpark and Simi) is being organized.  This will involve displaying an Iron Lung at the Simi Town Center.  Volunteers from all 5 Clubs are being sought to work in shifts at the display.  The first shift will be responsible for setting up the display and the last shift with taking it down.  The display will last from Tuesday, October 19th until Sunday, October 24th.  Following is a link to an online Volunteer Spreadsheet.  So far response has been timid to the point that there is a possibility that the display could get called off .  Please help if you can.

And, Jim Lewis sent us a Pledge Sign Up Sheet for a World Polio Day 2021 Challenge.  Jim is looking for 100% participation of all of the Clubs.  Please see below.
BJ Anderson and Larry Borovay have asked that we support the upcoming October fundraiser for the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center Foundation.  Please come out to the Junkyard on the 21st and not only support the Arts but enjoy some great food as well!
Yep, it's that time of year again!  Sophie Klepper is once again organizing our Club's annual dinner for the Senior Center.  It will be a Drive Thru dinner just like last year and will be held on November 24th.  Sophie will have a Sign Up Sheet out next week be so please keep this in mind.

Leigh said details on the upcoming Arroyo clean up  project with Simi Park and Rec are still being worked out.  It will involve dressing up 7 entrances to the Arroyo Bikeway with the two other Simi Rotary Clubs.  He brought back some photos from the field trip last Thursday October 14th with Park and Park - see below.  If you're interested in getting involved, bring your ideas and creativity.

Carolyn Boucher reminded us that we will be having a Team Ginny booth at the Street Fair with and an estimated 18,000 people potentially walking by.  Great exposure that will require help manning the booth.  She also added that there will be a kidney bean counting competition with a $250 Gift Card going to the winner.  And, Sophie Klepper will be there offering rock painting.  Please let Carolyn know if you can assist.

Saturday, October 30th.  Carolyn is looking for volunteers to work the booth between the hours of 8 AM  and 4 PM.
Carolyn's goal is to fill that jar with kidney beans
Please see Stephanie Shannon if you're interested in supporting the Moorpark HS Baseball team.

Our Guest Speaker this morning was Ms. Kat Merrick, founder of Totally Local VC.  Totally Local VC is a grass roots organization that brings together agriculture, farm workers and the food industry to help those affected by natural disasters.  She has been involved in the Thomas Fire, the Woolsey/Hill Fire, the Montecito Mudslide, the Redding Fire and the COVID crisis.  Her energy seems boundless with the words "Giving Back" and Greater Good" a large part of her vocabulary.  Following are some power point slides she presented this morning.
