Mel Vines
Assistant Principal
Simi Valley Adult School and Career Institute
Family:
Married with two adult daughters
Why I'm in Rotary:
I joined Rotary to involve myself in organized humanitarian efforts to give back to the community from which I live, and to help others "stranded on the side of a road."
My true Rotary moment came in2007, when I motivated students from Apollo Continuation High School’s Interact Club to create a grass-roots campaign, in assisting poor students and teachers in war-torn Afghanistan with needed books and school supplies.
What people don't know about me:
I was involved in community service BEFORE I joined Rotary.
Passions, hobbies, interests:
Photography, auto restoration, classical and jazz music; movie making
What I'm really good at:
teaching, motivating others (of all ages) to reach their goal
One goal I’d like to accomplish during my lifetime:
To become the site manager (principal) of Simi Valley Adult School
Favorite place to vacation/visit:
San Luis Obispo Farmers Market is a gateway to acceptance of people, their cultures, and music, whilebreaking-bread among strangers.
On my bucket list:
Complete the writing and publishing of my book

Retired - Farmers Insurance
Currently head coach of Manta Ray Swim Club and Simi Valley Y Masters Swim Program
Family:
Beautiful wife, Avanell, (33 years) and 2 married children: Megan Buche and Matt Hitchcock...and one Westie named "Duffy"
Why I'm in Rotary:
Joined Rotary about 4 years ago. Met Dan Jaeger at the Cajun Festival that year when I was providing a booth in the Kids' Area displaying the County Sheriff's Search and Rescue information and providing t-shirts for a donation. I was so impressed with the festival,(my first time attending,) that I thought I might want to be part of the organization that put it on. A few years later my Rotary moment occurred when I chaired the event in 2016.
What people don't know about me:
That I am 5th generation Californian and most of my extended family lives in the Bay Area
Strange, but true:
Up until we moved to Simi Valley when I was 42 years of age, I had never lived in the same place for more than 4 years. We have now lived in Simi since 1990.
Passions, hobbies, interests:
Competitive swimming/coaching, hiking the Sierras, traveling in Europe, spending time with my family
What I'm really good at:
Pretty good swim coach
One goal I'd like to accomplish during my lifetime:
Having grandkids
Favorite place to vacation/visit:
Yosemite and the Sierras
On my bucket list:
To learn more about and explore Eastern Europe
Most embarrassing moment:
(sorry...not going to fall for that!) But ask John Baxter, he has a good story about me!
