Highlights of Today's Meeting
Rat Fink
Jeff Newby was Rat Fink this morning and took the opportunity to tell us about what his business does.
Hats Off Goes To...
Dr. P. was our acting president this morning, but Dan was able to make it to the end of the meeting -- just in time to present this week's Hats off award to Sam Wolfe!
YES! - Youth Empowerment Summit
Gregg Hartman talked about this year's YES! - Youth Empowerment Summit - it will be held at Camp Rotary on Saturday, November 12th.  He asked us three very similar and yet different questions about euthanasia and told us that these are the kinds of questions students discuss during the day. Volunteers are needed! See flyer in this bulletin below for more information.
Family of Rotary Campout
Larry Borovay reminded everyone that we will be having our first Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise camp out on Saturday and Sunday, October 22-23. He has signup sheets on the table.  You can just come for the day/night to hang out and not sleep out.
Family of Rotary Potluck Dinner
Pam Perry announced that our next Family of Rotary potluck dinner will be on Saturday, November 5th at Hal and Carol Reniger's house - 3150 Travis Avenue.  Carol will be making her special brandied chili and the theme is comfort food!  Sign up sheets will be on the tables.
Sign Ups Soon for Thanksgiving Dinner at the Senior Center
Sam Wolfe announced that plans are underway for this year's Thanksgiving Dinner at the Senior Center on Wednesday November 23rd. Sign up sheets will be out shortly.

Member Spotlight
Mel Vines
Assistant Principal
Simi Valley Adult School and Career Institute
Married with two adult daughters
Why I'm in Rotary:
I joined Rotary to involve myself in organized humanitarian efforts to give back to the community from which I live, and to help others "stranded on the side of a road."
My true Rotary moment came in
2007, when I motivated students from Apollo Continuation High School’s Interact Club to create a grass-roots campaign, in assisting poor students and teachers in war-torn Afghanistan with needed books and school supplies.
What people don't know about me:
I was involved in community service BEFORE I joined Rotary.

Passions, hobbies, interests:
Photography, auto restoration, classical and jazz music; movie making
What I'm really good at:
teaching, motivating others (of all ages) to reach their goal

One goal I’d like to accomplish during my lifetime:
To become the site manager (principal) of Simi Valley Adult School

Favorite place to vacation/visit:
San Luis Obispo Farmers Market is a gateway to acceptance of people, their cultures, and music, while
breaking-bread among strangers.

On my bucket list:
Complete the writing and publishing of my book

Member Spotlight
Rob Hitchcock
Retired - Farmers Insurance
Currently head coach of Manta Ray Swim Club and Simi Valley Y Masters Swim Program
Beautiful wife, Avanell, (33 years) and 2 married children: Megan Buche and Matt Hitchcock...and one Westie named "Duffy"

Why I'm in Rotary:
Joined Rotary about 4 years ago.  Met Dan Jaeger at the Cajun Festival that year when I was providing a booth in the Kids' Area displaying the County Sheriff's Search and Rescue information and providing t-shirts for a donation.  I was so impressed with the festival,(my first time attending,) that I thought I might want to be part of the organization that put it on.  A few years later my Rotary moment occurred when I chaired the event in 2016.
What people don't know about me:
That I am 5th generation Californian and most of my extended family lives in the Bay Area
Strange, but true:
Up until we moved to Simi Valley when I was 42 years of age, I had never lived in the same place for more than 4 years.  We have now lived in Simi since 1990.
Passions, hobbies, interests:
Competitive swimming/coaching, hiking the Sierras, traveling in Europe, spending time with my family
What I'm really good at:
Pretty good swim coach
One goal I'd like to accomplish during my lifetime:
Having grandkids
Favorite place to vacation/visit:
Yosemite and the Sierras
On my bucket list:
To learn more about and explore Eastern Europe
Most embarrassing moment:
(sorry...not going to fall for that!)  But ask John Baxter, he has a good story about me!

Our club recently provided funding to translate a peace video from English into Spanish so that its message can be brought to Spanish speaking countries.  Click below to see the original video in English.
Polio Update - We're this close!
There have been only 19 cases this year of Polio due to the wild polio virus.  They have all occurred in Pakistan and Afghanistan.  The most recent case was 4 weeks ago.  Click on the link below for more information.
