Highlights of Today's Meeting
President Mike McCaffrey talked about how November is Foundation Month for Rotary International and thanked everyone that participated in last week's Thanksgiving Dinner.
Steve Johnson shared a flag he received when he visited the Kelowna, Canada club!
A note from the Club Parliamentarian
Tim Shannon

Remember that next week is the annual meeting of the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise!  During this meeting we will be  approving President Elect Deb’s officers and board of directors and we will be voting on the President Elect Nominee.

On the ballot will be the Past Presidents recommendation of Jim Lowry. Also on the ballot will be those who were nominated from the floor during our meeting of November 15th and have accepted the nomination. These individuals are Larry Borovay, Tim Gray and Bill Klepper.

President Mike offered the nominees the opportunity to provide a vision of the club:

Bill Klepper: I love our Club. The friendship, talent and energy in the room each and every week is truly special. The goal is to be One club. That all members feel that they are included.

I want to make the selection for both President and Board Members to be more inclusive of every club member. I want to make sure that board decisions are explained clearly to our  members so that each one  understands and feels that they are a part the process.

To attract new members we should be the club that the community is drawn to and wants to join. We do this by showing the long lasting friendships that are created in our club, how much our club  helps others and that our our meetings are the most entertaining of any club each and every week.

Jim Lowry: Not long ago I toured a business in Michigan belonging to a good friend.  During the tour we were introduced to Danny.  Danny was an older man, retired, with a contagious smile and willingness to do anything for the company.  His main job was to wonder around the assembly floor and office suites, looking for things that needed cleaning, straitening up, or repaired.  When I met Danny, he was doing the dishes in the very large break room/lunch area.  I was told by my friend that one day a worker on the assembly floor challenged Danny by telling him “you walk around here like you own the business”.  Upon which Danny replied, “I do….and so should you!”.

As president in ‘20-’21 I want our club to be owned by every one of its members.  I want members to be constantly “wandering around looking for things Rotary can do”.  Thursday is not just going to be another meeting, it’s going to be a gathering of dedicated, loyal, thinking and motivated people coming together for fellowship and camaraderie with a goal of Service Above Self.

Simi Valley has the Welcome to Simi Valley sign, which our club created.  It has Camp Rotary, which our club initiated.  But there are no other hard assets around our community bearing the Rotary symbol.  So ’20-’21 will be the year of getting Rotary’s name out into the community, not just in press releases, but in hard assets.  People in Simi Valley will know Rotary is a prime mover in our town.

There are three clubs in Simi Valley and I want to see us all work together to accomplish local service projects for the betterment of our community.  And, to never forget what makes Rotary great: it is our members and their commitment to help others in need.

PROGRAM
Mental Health Crisis
in Ventura County
Sargent Steve Shorts - SVPD
Julia Glantz
We had the opportunity to hear from Sgt. Steve Shorts and Julia Glantz about the mental health crisis in Ventura County and how these issues are being addressed.

Some of the statistics include:
1. 50,771 individuals in the county have been diagnosed with mental illness
2. 41% of those identified have suicidal talk

The SVPD has a program in place - CIT - Crisis Intervention Team - that trains officers in how to effectively handle situations where there are individuals with mental health issues.

The mission of the Ventura County Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program is to develop partnerships with mental health consumers and their family members, and other agencies and organizations. CIT officers will respond to individuals who are in crisis as a result of a mental disorder, and shall assess and assist those individuals in the most effective and compassionate manner possible.

Julia Glantz talked about how the county is handling suicide prevention and the various services that are offered through the Ventura County Behavioral Health Department.
