President Deb Davila received her President's Badge this morning from Past President Mike McCaffrey. It's official now!
DISCUSSION ABOUT CAJUN
President Deb Davila initiated a discussion about the Cajun & Blues Festival by talking about how challenging the festival has been in the past few years and how profits have been squeezed.  This discussion will be continued next week, but here are a few highlights from our members:
-- It was mentioned that the festival is more than just profits - it's about friendships, relationships, smiles and community engagement. Tying in with that it was suggested that we as members, need to be on the same page when we promote the event - community, fundraiser, etc.
-- Ticket prices are too high for many local families, especially once they enter the park they then need to pay for the rides, food ,etc. It was suggested that we create incentives with ticket purchases.
-- Possibly make it one day event and maybe just a music festival in general.
-- The need for an independent audit to see what has changed. This tied in with the suggestion that there are some financial inconsistencies and the need to look further into the details - such as beer sales and their expense versus actual sales. In the past, every check request was truly scrutinized.
-- The need to understand what the festival really is - is it for the community, to raise money for local charities or a club event.
-- Sponsors may not be happy with the results since their money could have made a greater impact at one organization. (Also, without this income we would have made no money at all.) The goal has always been for sponsors to understand that income would be spread to many local organizations thereby having a greater impact in the community.
-- There were some positives -- online sales were the best ever! The kids area had many families attending.
Potato Party Planned - August 10
Kim Schulte reminded everyone about the upcoming unique Family of Rotary event Potato Party at his house on Saturday, August 10 at 5:00 p.m.  His address is: 12100 Browns Canyon, Chatsworth.
Kim shared photos and an actual potato this morning!  Those attending need to bring a side (that fits in a meatloaf tin) and whatever they want to BBQ that night!

PROGRAM
Maria Ventura
Southern California Gas Company
We had the pleasure of hearing from Maria Ventura, the Public Affairs Manager from So Cal Gas Company.  She talked about renewable energy and how California leads the nation in setting climate goals and policy.  She highlighted the energy evolution - from coal to natural gas to greener and cleaner energy - like wind and solar.  But she reminded us that natural gas solves the intermittency issues with wind and solar.  She also talked about how biogas is converted and said we need a balanced energy approach.
