Member Spotlight
Jeff Newby
President, JHN Inc. (Coustic-Glo)
Family:
Wife: Mary Ann "Trish" Newby, 2 kids, 4 G. kids, 102 yr old mother
Why I'm in Rotary:
My Rotary moment happens every year when we pass out the allocation checks and I listen to the recipients tell the good deeds they are going to use the money for. This meeting recharges my batteries every year and increases my passion for our festival and the good that our club does.
What don’t people know about me that they should:
Born in Iowa City, Iowa 3 days before Pearl Harbor. Moved all over the country following my father and his home Navy base during WW II. Moved to Palo Alto when I was 6 years old and stayed there thru graduation from Stanford. Passed through the Air Forcethen on to New York where I was a Senior Writer/Producer/Art Director at two Madison Ave. ad agencies. Shared a Peabody award for a TV movie that I was involved with.
Strange, but true:
I didn't know I was color blind until the end of my Sophomore year at Stanford. Always wondered why I liked turquoise pants, an orange shirt all held together with a pink belt. So they nicknamed me Hollywood.
Passions, hobbies, interests:
For my growing up years I was an avidsail boat racer and actually won several big regattas in boats ranging from 8' to 40'. Current passion is golf - a game I'll never master. Also enjoy photography, reading novels and wine making, tasting and drinking.
What I'm really good at:
I know how to market and sell stuff and I'm really good at it.
One goal I’d like to accomplish during my lifetime:
I used to want to write the great American novel. Then I got old. My goal is to actually retire some day soon and travel the USA with my wife and dog in our motorhome.
Favorite place to vacation/visit:
Hawaii is number one but it's a really tough drive in the motorhome.
On my bucket list:
A hole in one. Aone year sailing trip in the Caribbean. Learning to sing.
Most embarrassing moment:
I was a young, hot shot producer from New York driving my rental Shelby GT 350 Mustang to the Columbia Records building for a music recording session. Parked my hot Shelby right in front of the building. Jumped out wearing my cool "New York blazer" and grabbed my leather briefcase from the car seat. It was unlocked. Everything in it spread itself across Hollywood Blvd. Hot shot New York producer was now crawling around Hollywood Blvd. picking everything up. No more blazers and leather briefcases for current older version now called Catfish.
What contest did you win that nobody knows about?:
I won the twist dance contest at Stanford. Probably could still do it today.
