President Bill gave his first President’s Moment. He talked about starting out in Rotary working on the Cajun Festival and his involvement grew from there. He’s planning on the following activities for 2020: A simpler Cajun Festival; A James Bond Movie night; A Halloween festivity; A New Year’s Eve celebration; A Senior Center Thanksgiving; A Bike Assembly; YES Program; Keeping up on Happy Face Hill among others.
Thanks were given to Bob Whalen for his help in coordinating the breakfast.

Senior Center Needs Drivers
Jake Finch reported that during the COVID-19 emergency, the Senior Center has seen a significant increase in the number of meals it provides to seniors in the community. The Center has been supported by volunteer drivers over the past few months to deliver the additional meals to meet the need in the community. However, many of these volunteers are now going back to work and will no longer be able to assist.
The Senior Center is seeking 2 – 3 drivers who could start next week for 2 – 3 hours per day. If you have the time and are interested, please contact Angel Sierra, Senior Center Manager, at (805)583-6366 to learn more about volunteering to deliver meals to the seniors in our community. Please share this with your community groups.

Camp Rotary Projects
Leigh Seaton talked about upcoming Community Service Projects:
On Saturday, July 11 he’s looking for volunteers to help clean up Camp Rotary. This will involve weeding and general clean up. Leigh anticipates this will take about 2 hours.
In the next month or so, Leigh will be fixing up the Camp Rotary signs that were destroyed in the fires. More to follow on that.

Dee Dee Cavanaugh
Councilwoman Cavaugnah spoke on several topics including the City Budget, City Development and the Simi Valley Police Department.
In a nutshell, Simi Valley’s budget is in good shape. The 2020 budget includes a surplus in fact. We have received a $3.2 million Tax Adjustment from the County. And she expects the 2021 budget to be balanced. In addition we also have a Covid Recovery Fund available if needed along with a Reserve Fund as well.
Development in Simi Valley includes a 54 Unit Apartment Building on Patricia Ave.; Hobby Lobby and Planet Fitness in the former Walmart; An Amazon Distribution site; The B of A site on Tapo Canyon is in escrow with an Industrial Building planned; The former Farmers Building site is in escrow with a Housing Development planned.
Our Police Department wants everyone to know that they have banned Choke Holds and do not allow for Neck Restraints. De-escalation is a top priority and is a current policy. Use of Force occurrences is rare and, when they do occur, they are immediately investigated. They do not hire any officers who have been fired or disciplined in other police departments. Body cameras have been purchased and every policeman will have one on duty. Lastly, the CIT Program, which is mental health program, is a very important part of the policing protocol.
