President Laura started the meeting a little early due to our packed agenda this morning.  She welcomed our Zoom participants, Bill Fox, B.J. Anderson, Bruce Bromberg, Cindy Jacoby and Linas Kojelis. She also mentioned that our Club has received numerous awards over the years and has a reputation within Rotary for getting things done.  We are, in Laura's words, a special Club.

Laura then recited her "Why Rotary" elevator speech to us, going something like this:

Simi Sunrise Rotary is a non-political, non-religious social organization comprised of business, civic and professional leaders who meet on a regular basis in order to form friendships that will better the community through those friendships both locally and abroad.

Laura then ended with a reading of the 4 Way Test, a good reminder for us all.

Our Speaker this morning, John Roesch, is a professional Foley artist and has worked in the film industry for over 44 years.  A Foley artist is a person who re-creates sounds for film, video, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality. They replace sounds that cannot properly be recorded on set. Foley studios have viewing screens, and props, as well as recording equipment to record sounds as they watch the film.

He works at Skywalker Sound and his company, Audible Bandwidth Productions can consult, design and implement Foley Stages from construction to "shakedown" anywhere in the world.  He's worked on 11 films in his career that have been nominated for an Academy Award in Sound.

John entertained us with his knowledge of sound and a few stories about his experiences in the industry including being mistaken for George Lucas a few times over the years.  One of these mistaken identities got him a free meal once, much to his embarrassment. He left us with the comment that our most precious commodity is time and that we shouldn't waste it.  Truer words were never spoken.

John delivered his presentation via Zoom from Skywalker Ranch

Bill and Joyce met in their childhood, living in the same town of Port Chester, NY. Joyce remembers Bill playing marbles as a little boy.

He attended Middlebury College in Vermont and studied Russian. When he joined the Army, he was stationed in Germany and worked in Intelligence.

He came to California because of his job at IBM. He joined Rotary because he had a Tire Shop in Newbury Park. His original intention of networking in Rotary became a life of serving others.

Martha Macker was highlighted this morning as our Person of Interest.  Carolyn Boucher interviewed Martha and we found out the following:

Martha works at Varenita, a Senior Living Center here in Simi after having worked with children.  From one end of the spectrum to the other she said.  She has been in Simi for five years now and credits Rotary for opening up and expanding her relationships and friendships here in Simi

ROYAL ROTARIAN

Stephanie Shannon recognized Harry VanDyck as our Royal Rotarian this week.  Harry's contribution to this community is quite extraordinary giving generously of both his time and money.  He's served as past president of the Boys and Girls Club, the Free Clinic here in Simi, and the Simi Chamber of Commerce.  Harry will do ANYTHING for ANYONE ANYTIME.  But, most importantly, he's Marilyn's Best Friend.

Steve Hise is the little boy in the background trying out his sister's new tricycle at her birthday party.  Steve wanted to make sure it worked.  She apparently wasn't too upset since she and Steve are now in business together.

Fun Facts:  Steve is one of eight siblings (third in line) and has five children which explains his loss of hair.

That's Deb Davila reluctantly putting her arm around her little brother.  He doesn't look too thrilled either.

Fun Facts:  Deb was a high jumper and hurdler in high school.  She was also an All American in tennis in college.  And, not to spread dirty laundry, she married her tennis coach.

......and Deb today.  She hasn't changed a bit!

Our meeting next week, July 28th, will be in person at the Best Western.  See you there!

======================
Please remember to bring a friend or an acquaintance to our next meeting.  This is a GREAT way to grow our membership!  And the guest's breakfast is taken care of.
