Stephanie Shannon was unable to attend the meeting this morning.  Rumor has it that she was out doing reconnaissance in support of ensuring that everyone who can is volunteering for the Happy Face Music Festival.  Be afraid, be very afraid.

President Kathryn Scroggin

President Kathryn opened by  welcoming our Zoom participants and wishing everyone a happy Cinco de Mayo.  She then said that in honor of May being Rotary Youth Services month, some of our Guests this morning are students who recently completed the 2022 RYLA program.  See below for more details.  Kathryn thanked Dorina Timbol for her involvement in RYLA noting that RYLA is an excellent example of the power of Simi Sunrise.

Our challenge last week, she said, was to accept the differences in all of us.  And, that when we do this, we empower each other.  Look to help others.

Kathryn's weekly quote is from Stephen King.  “You can, you should, and if you're brave enough to start, you will."

Dorina Timbol, at the podium, invited several Guests this morning from the recently completed RYLA conference.  Dorina is a key counselor at RYLA and, according to participants, ran the best course this year which was on Diversity.

Pictured above, left to right standing: Adrian Jordan, Tiffany Chang, Pashi Khandare (all students) and Tammy Jordan, (who helped as a counselor).

All of Dorina's Guests spoke about what a tremendously positive impact the RYLA Conference had them.  Words like "life changing", "best experience of my life", "best decision I have made in high school" and "helped me grow" were heard.  Both Dorina and Tammy said that there was a high level of energy at the conference with the students and the students gave them both hope for the future.  As Dorina said, there is no better way to invest in our future than to give your time working and helping kids.  The rewards are amazing and she encouraged us all to volunteer to experience them.

And, Dr. P wanted everyone to know that both Adrian and Tiffany attend Monte Vista.  And he did it in such a subtle way, no one probably even noticed it.

Bill Klepper is looking for help to clean up Happy Face Hill on Saturday, May 14th.  It needs to look its best with its namesake music festival coming up.

Meet at Jerry's at 7:00 AM and then start work at 8:00 AM.  Bring weed wackers if you have them and gloves.  See you there!

Jake gave us an update on her requests for Gift Cards last week.  As a reminder, her two requests  had to do with, one, helping out the Simi Valley Unified School District students that are in need of assistance.  School District resources have been stressed to the limit and help is needed to replenish those resources.  That help can come to the District in the form of Gift Card donations for gas, groceries, etc. at places like Target and Walmart.  $25 and $50 Gift Cards work best.

Jake's second request was more directed.  Jake said that the District had just enrolled their first students, 8 and 14 year old girls, who have fled Ukraine with their mother.  The family came here with basically the clothes on their back so are in need of everything.  Gift cards to Kohls and Target would be very helpful.  As an update, Jake said that an account has been set up and help has been coming in.  But more is needed as more refugees from Ukraine have arrived here in Simi with school age children.

If you can help out, please reach out to Jake.

Also, a big shout out to Jesus Torres, who is providing legal services for these refugees pro bono.  Providing a great example to us all!

This email from Mr. Hall  spells out the details for Valley View:

Dear Community Member,

Valley View Middle School is inviting you to an important event for our school by taking on the task of interviewing our phenomenal eighth grade students.  As part of their culminating activity from middle school, students are expected to create a portfolio and present it to a community member.  Our Portfolio Day is on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.  The portfolio will review what they have completed in eighth grade as well as detail a career that our students have shown an interest in.  The students will impress you with their portfolios, their communication skills and their readiness to advance to the next level of their educational careers.
We would like to have a number of community members from all careers to join us to interview our students.  We have morning times available from 8:00 am to 12:15 pm, afternoon times from 11:55 am to 2:35 pm or you can volunteer all day if you are able to.  For those that are able to volunteer on May 18, we will provide you with information as to where to park as well as a complimentary lunch.  Your ability to volunteer for our students means a lot to us, this is an important day for our 8th graders.
If you are able to volunteer, please RSVP with Debbie Edwards at (805) 520-6820 ext. 1306 or email or Debbie at debbie.edwards@simivalleyusd.org.  We thank you in advance for the difference you are making for our students.

Sincerely,
Michael Hall

Tim Gray reminded us to let Tim or John Tolson know if you need or want any paper tickets.  Tim left us with Sell, Sell, Sell, Like, Like, Like and Share, Share, Share!

Also, please, for your own safety per Stephanie's opening remarks,  get back to Stephanie or Kailey for the Volunteer position you want to fill.  Lots of volunteers will be needed and there will be an all hands meeting.

To recap, The Happy Face Music Festival will be held on Saturday, May 28th which is Memorial Day weekend.  It will be a half day event at the Rancho Simi Park with no more than 2000 tickets being sold at $50 per ticket.  It will follow a minimal concept with Food, Alcohol (both beer and wine), and Entertainment provided with only those 21 and over being admitted.

John Baxter is looking for help distributing flyers and posters around town.  Let John know if you can help.

Mike Sidlinger, who is heading up security, and John Bagnall let us know that there is a Security team meeting on May 19th immediately after the Rotary meeting.  If you are part of the Security team, its important to attend.  As a side note, Mike's ability to delegate was really impressive.
Here's Mike delegating to John

Today's Guest Speaker was Mr. Mike Khalilpour, a partner with the Green Law Group here in Simi Valley.  Mike heads up the Estate Planning group.  Mike left us all with a lot of good advice.  The main thing he emphasized was that it is very important to have your assets protected with proper Estate Planning.  If your assets are not protected, they will end up in probate meaning a large portion of these assets will be taken by the government.  If you don't have a trust(s) set up, you should think very hard about it and consult an attorney.
