Today's meeting was a test of our resolve!
President Bill started his message by paraphrasing Charlie Brown, "You're not going to let a little wind keep us from meeting, are you?".  We all then took protection under the tarps at the Junkyard and soldiered on like the true Rotarians we are.

Bill welcomed Lisa Hemingway and Vance Linge of Waste Management who are looking for help in obtaining funds for the Royal High football team.  The team is need of helmets.  Please see Bill if you can help.

Also, Bill reminded us that Mike Sidlinger, who is recuperating from his accident, needs help putting up his Christmas Tree.  If you can assist, please meet at 93 Highland Road here in Simi at 7 PM this evening, Thursday the 3rd.

Our next meeting will be a Board Meeting on December 10 and will be on Zoom.  Please join us if you can.

======================
Please bring a friend or an acquaintance to our next meeting.  This is a great way to introduce someone new to what being a Rotarian is all about.

Carolyn Boucher gave us an update on Team Ginny.  She reminded us about the business cards available with the Team Ginny message that can be handed out.  She also talked about our tapping into the local Painted Rock Community by challenging them to place Painted Rocks throughout Simi with the Team Ginny message on them.  This is a great way to get the word out and adhere to the social distancing guidelines in place due to the Covid virus.  And, of course, please continue to share the message on Social Media, especially the hotline phone number - 805-517-1717.  A donor can't be found without getting the word out.

If you need to learn how to Share on social media, please reach out to Team Ginny and they will be glad to help.

Sophie gave us a wrap up on the Senior Center Thanksgiving Dinner letting us know it was a great success.  Over 500 meals were handed out with many extra meals going out to our local Police Department, Fire Department and the Samaritan Center.  The feedback, pun intended, was wonderful as well.  Many said that the meal was as good as last year.  Sophie ended by thanking all who pitched in including Mary Paseta; Tim Gray who brought in the Boy Scouts; the Y's Men for cooking the turkeys and keeping their record perfect for not having caused any food-borne illnesses; and Robert Martin for organizing the parking lot ensuring no one was run over.

Truly one of the community events sponsored by our Club that stands out.  Great job organizing it Sophie!

REMINDER
FM Radio "Drive-in" Capability for Simi Sunrise
Please remember that you can now sit safely in your car and simply tune to 88.9 on the FM dial and listen to our outdoor meetings.  You will clearly hear the audio from our entire meeting in the Junkyard parking lot.

Smoke Alarms
Leigh Seaton let us know that the installation of the Smoke Alarms at the Crest Mobile Home Park has been postponed due to the Covid virus.  It will take place at a new date to be determined.  Stay tuned.....

REMINDER
Chas Wilson let us know how we can all help our Club Charity, the Simi Sunrise Rotary Charitable Foundation and shop at the same time.  When you make a purchase on Amazon, you can link up with our charity to make a donation.  Please see Chas if you have any questions.
Dr. P reminded us about this event and is looking for help getting the unassembled bikes from Monte Vista to the Junkyard parking lot that Saturday morning.  This would happen at 6:30 AM.  He's looking for pick up trucks and strong backs.  There was a suggestion that the bikes could be assembled at Monte Vista and then we'd ride them over to the Junkyard but that was nixed after thinking it through.
See Dr. P if you can help.

Also, this is a great opportunity to meet the Rotarians from the Noontime and Sunset Clubs as they will be participating as well.  This gives the Sunrise Club a chance to show them how a charity event is really run!

A Shout Out was given to Lisa Hemingway at Waste Management for all the help she is giving for this event!

What better way to get into the Holiday Spirit than helping out with the Annual Bike Assembly.  Hope to see you there!

Here's a message from Savi to Deb that speaks very well to the spirit and enthusiasm of not only our District but, specifically, to our Club.  Thanks go out to Deb for her leadership and thanks go out to the Club for its generosity.  We all deserve a high five and a Job Well Done!  Thanks for sharing Savi.....

Dear 2019-2020 President Deb ,

I hope you and your club’s members are  healthy and staying engaged with each other and the community.  This year continues to be challenging, but  almost everyone seems to have charted a path that works.

This is an update on the accomplishments and successes of last year 2019-2020.
Our district has recently been recognized for our outstanding contribution to the Rotary Foundation during the 2019-2020 year.

When compared to other districts stretching all the way from Hawaii to Texas, our district gave the second highest amount to the Rotary Foundation’s Annual Program Fund and we were third highest in total giving to The Rotary Foundation.  This is a major accomplishment!

Your club’s generous donation played a significant role in this achievement and put District 5240 in the recognition spotlight.  But in the end, it is not about the recognitions that we amass but it is about the lives that we affect.

I would like to congratulate you for your leadership last year as you held your club together through unprecedented times and continued to move forward to make a difference locally and globally.  I would further like to thank your club for the generous donation to the Rotary Foundation.

Your annual fund goal was $17,000 and you ended up giving $17,502. With your other donations you gave an impressive total of  $30,429.

This is very commendable given that the last quarter of last year was the most challenging and your club was confronted with many more needs locally each day. You and your club were able to address both the local needs by inventing new ways to help and yet never losing sight of the global needs that are ever present in our world.  Your contributions will go far to help The Rotary Foundation maintain its role of being the number one humanitarian  organization  serving countries around the globe.

Every dollar has the potential to change lives and as a result of our collective effort:

Perhaps somewhere in the world a village now has clean water and a child no longer has to face the possibility of dying as a result of drinking contaminated water.

It might provide lifesaving medicine for someone’s mother or education for children, opening up a future of infinite possibilities.

Or perhaps the abused and neglected now have a safe haven where they can heal and dare to dream of a better life.

When you give to the Rotary Foundation you do not know whose life it will impact, nor does it matter because Rotarians believe each life has equal value.

On behalf of our Foundation Chair Frank Ortiz and his team we thank you and the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise   for your generosity, your kindness and your humanity.

Savi

Mike Mutal wanted to let us all know that, sadly, Barton's, a long time fixture here in Simi will be closing in the next few days.  Please make a visit soon if you can.
Mark Lowry, President of the Rotary Sunset Club, paid us a visit today to let us know about an upcoming Holiday Food Drive his Club is sponsoring.  He's looking for donations for this very much needed December 12 event.  Please help if you can.
Mark (AKA Jim's son) Lowry
Mark also talked about another event his Club is sponsoring having to do with Donuts.  Buy a box of them for $12 and then donate them to your favorite group.  Corey Baker said that he knew of a particular department here in Simi that would be very appreciative of Donuts.......just saying.

Ms. Cheryl Temple
Our Guest Speaker today was Ms. Cheryl Temple, who is the Chief Assistant to the Ventura County District Attorney.  Ms. Temple spoke to us today about her involvement in the prosecution of the Golden State Killer (GSK), Joseph DeAngelo, as lead prosecutor on the case for Ventura County.

Ms. Temple started with the Ventura County DA's office in 1997.  This was about the same time that it was determined that a series of rapes, murders and burglaries that had occurred in California in the 1970's and 1980's were tied to the same person.  The crimes were committed in 11 different counties and included 13 murders, 50 rapes, 87 crime victims, and 55 crime scenes in conjunction with several hundred assorted crimes.  The monster alluded capture for over 40 years.

The break in the case came in 2016 through the use of DNA.  A DNA sample from Charlene Smith, a city of Ventura murder victim, matched the DNA of DeAngelo that was found through a genealogy database. He plead guilty at trail and was subsequently sentenced April 23rd, 2018 to 11 life terms.  He will die in prison.

Ms. Smith said that it was unfortunate that the Death Penalty was not pursued but, for various reasons, that wasn't practical.  Reasons she cited included DeAngelo's age (74) and the length of time a Death Penalty trial takes (8-10 years) meaning he would probably not live to see the trial completed; the estimated $15 million the trial would cost; and the fact that our governor put a moratorium on the death penalty.  She did gain satisfaction from the fact that DeAngelo agreed to plead guilty to every single crime of which he was accused.  This gave every single victim the opportunity to face this devil at his sentencing hearing.  These victim statements went on for five days.
