2022 - 2023 Rotary Theme
President Laura welcomed our Zoom participants and gave her elevator speech about Rotary for the benefit of our guests.

Laura then asked for some volunteers tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM at Valley View Middle School to continue with the Simi Smiles rock painting project with the students.  The painting was a continuation from last Wednesday and she's hoping for a bit more Club participation tomorrow than last Wednesday.  She was the only one there last week.  Then Laura teased us with a Huge, Big, Gigantic surprise next week in regard to the Simi Smiles project.  She said that she and John Baxter have been talking to a national organization about expanding Simi Smiles city-wide.  Stay tuned.....

Laura then encouraged those of us who have not done so to download the ClubRunner App.  It provides access to everything Rotary and is extremely helpful in keeping up with what's going on with the Club and contacting other Club members.  A link to the App is provided at the end of this Bulletin.

Lastly, Laura reminded us about the Mid-Year Retreat on Saturday, November 5th at 10 AM.  It will be held at 99.1 The Ranch.  All Board members will meet and others are encouraged to attend as well.  This is a great opportunity to share your thoughts about the direction that you'd like to see the Club going.

Josh Persky, sponsored by Dorina Timbol, was inducted as our newest Club member this morning.  Josh is a Location Manager in the movie industry and also owns a studio rental business.  He's been married to his high school sweetheart, Stacy, for 28 years.  They have two children, Jeremy and Ariana with Ariana being in the Interact Club.  The picture above was taken in Nashville.

Josh has been volunteering with Dorina's non-profit for over a year now and decided he wanted to do even more in the community.  Welcome Josh!

Laura reminded us that Bill and Sophie Klepper are coordinating the upcoming Thanksgiving Dinner at the Senior Center.  It will be held on Wednesday, November 23rd.  Volunteers will be needed Tuesday evening, November 22nd for set up (since this year's dinner will be served inside) as well as Wednesday, the 23rd from 1:00 PM until about 10:00 PM.  Sign Up Sheets will be available at our November 3rd meeting so please keep this wonderful event on your front burner.

President Laura gave us an update on the Simi Smiles project at Valley View Middle School.  The rock painting took place last Wednesday (see pictures below) but the bad news is that Laura was the only Club member who participated!  However, the good news is that we can all redeem ourselves tomorrow, Friday, October 28th at 7:30 AM because there are still more rocks to paint.  So please come and support our president and the Simi Smiles project by showing up at Valley View tomorrow at 7:30 AM and help the kids get this phase of the project completed.  We need more than one person from the Club in the picture!

Laura reminded us to SAVE THE DATE for the Group 5 meeting on Sunday, December 4th at the Sunset Hills Golf and Tennis Club.  It will be a brunch starting at 10 AM and will feature Howard Berger, an Academy award winning make up artist as the Guest Speaker.  Tickets are $30 and the event will include all 5 local Rotary Clubs from Moorpark (2) and Simi (3).  Laura would really like a good showing from our Club and will be sending out another invitation.  She then warned us that if the invitation was not responded to (either yes or no), she would be calling you, and no one wants to get that call.

As an added treat, Howard will be applying make up on Herschel Berger (first cousins), a process that can only benefit a mug like Herschel's.  You don't want to miss that!

Carolyn Boucher is still looking for help to man the booth at the upcoming Simi Valley Street Fair on Saturday, October 29thShe's short of the people needed to make this happen smoothly.  This is a great opportunity to get the Rotary name out there.  She's looking for help with the Set Up at 7:30 AM and then shifts manning the booth from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM as well as the Teardown at 4:00 PM.  See Carolyn if you can assist or email her at:

Larry gave us a wrap up of the financial results of Oktoberfest.  See below for a itemized breakdown.  Bottom line, the latest tally shows we had a Net Profit of nearly $39,000!  Great job Larry!  Let's see if Demi can't beat that but no pressure Demi.

Karen Finmark with the Free Clinic came to give us a Big Thank You for our Club's help in making the Run such a success.  She said the volunteers were awesome and the community response was even more so.  She gave a special Shout Out to Anni Sumby who played a huge role in the event's success.  A comment received from the winner of one of the races was that it was the best course he's ever run manned by the most helpful volunteers he's ever encountered.  And, best of all Karen said, they raised the most money that they have ever raised.  Job well done!

Jake Finch gave us an update on the Gift Card program she initiated with the Club last March.  These were the Gift Cards that were donated to help Simi Valley school kids and their families in need.  Jake gave us some stark statistics.  She said that there are 214 children in K-12 that are homeless here in Simi with 58 of those in High School.  In addition, there are 63 Foster Children, 27 of whom are in High School.

The good news is that, since last March, 115 Gift Cards have been donated totaling $4,875 with $1,850 of that being disbursed to those in need. Over $3,000 of that amount was from our Club alone!  Our Club is AWSOME!

More help is always appreciated Jake said and that while Gift Cards to Kohls and Target are helpful, she said that she's also looking for Gift Cards to stores like Aldi and Smart & Final as well.

Mike Kort from the Rotary Sunset Club joined us this morning looking for help with his Club's Hopetown Reunion event.  This is one of Simi's premier events and it is being held Sunday, November 6th and he's looking for 6-7 volunteers.  Mike can be reached at 818.590.5433 if you can help.

======================
Savi Bhim talked to us this morning about World Polio Day, which was this past Monday, October 24th.  She gave us all a history lesson in regard to the fight against Polio and Rotary International's role in that crusade.

Rotary International first got involved in 1979 with a very successful drive against Polio in the Philippines.  This lead to a worldwide effort to eradicate the disease starting in 1985, making it a No. 1 Rotary International priority.  The results of this eradication effort have been stunning.  In 1988 there were 350,000 cases of Polio in 125 countries decreasing to 6 cases in 2021.   And, with the exception of a recent case in July of 2022 in New York, there have been no cases in the US since 1979.

So, while great strides have been made in eradicating this disease, there are still those pockets of resistance remaining that continue to defy our efforts.  Savi left us with the thought that Polio is still our business even though it is not part of our existence.  And that the fight will continue until defeat is total and beyond the ability to return.

======================
Dr. Carla Valdez, Doctor of Education, Master of Public Health and Master of Certified Health Education Specialist talked to us further this morning about Polio, picking up where Savi Bhim left off.

Dr. Valdez has been a lecturer at Cal State Northridge in the Department of Health Sciences  (Public Health program) since 2007.  Additionally, she is an adjunct faculty member at LA Mission College and Cal Lutheran University.  Dr. Valdez has extensive public health education and management experience in both community and clinic-based settings.

Dr. Valdez spoke more specifically about the New York Polio case.  On July 23, 2022 a case of Polio was reported in Rockland County, New York.  The person who contracted it was an unvaccinated young adult who experienced severe symptoms, including paralysis, and was hospitalized.  As noted by Savi, the last case prior to this that was reported in the US was in 1979.  In fact, the World Health Organization Region of the Americas was declared polio-free in 1994.  Testing and analysis performed on samples of wastewater in Rockland, Orange, Sullivan and Nassau Counties along with New York City detected the poliovirus repeatedly.  All samples reported were samples of concern meaning they can cause paralysis in humans and were all genetically linked to the case Rockland County.

Based on these positive samples, a State of Emergency was declared allowing for an expanded approach to fighting a potential outbreak.
